Me & gogeta was definitely saying early on Herbert was a Guard.

A lot of the things I been saying on KLH I said last year https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/kai-leon-herbert.135115/page-2

He's always been a Guard, but has to play Tackle out of lack of depth, when we bring in Rivers & if we land Walker for next year wouldn't be shocked one bit if we moved him inside, he would thrive at LG/RG.
oh we getting walker fam Im pretty confident about that one for some reason

If they can hold their own against perhaps the best group of 4 DEs in the country, then they can handle anything anyone else has to offer.

The biggest thing with the young OL especially for Zion is doing it for 13 games +. That old man strength will wear you down

this season will say a lot about butch berry i think... you can look back at james franklin's first year at penn state or obviously FSU last year to see how an awful offensive line can really mess up a new coach's first season. thankfully we have talent (or so we think)... as i've said in other threads for me it's really about berry maintaining the line's confidence thru the beginning of the season because there will be bad plays, guys getting beat, things not looking right etc. given our situation on offense there's no way everything goes smoothly with the line with essentially two primetime road games to open the season. but it can't ruin the confidence of the line or offense as a whole for the rest of the year.

I think it was either Coach Macho or Prop Joe when he came out of HS that said Herbert would never play a down of OT at UM. He was a guard all the way.

I think we all went into this offseason hoping it would be Campbell-Donaldson-Gaynor-Scaife-Kennedy come Aug 24th. . I just don't think we ever thought it would be Zion Nelson and that Kennedy would be **** near on the scout team. Smh. It is what it is.

Herbert issue is he's always been too weak. It was initially blamed on his shoulder injury but I don't think moving him inside will solve anything. Year 3 he should be not being getting passed up by freshman.

The answer is yes. With technique you can get “run over slowly.” Meaning you can still get owned on a play but your job is to make just enough resistance that the play gets executed.

It’s when guy whiff or just get flat steamrolled that it really stands out as a negative

LCE...

What do you think are the finer points between Guard and Tackle?

What are those very subtle qualities that makebtje difference?

Arm length, quick and steady feet a must for the Ts...

“I’ve seen big improvements since he’s been here,” Campbell said of Barry. “Guys taking risks and everybody learning to trust everybody. Coach Barry came in with a different mindset, different drills, from a different atmosphere - he came from Tampa. He’s really a teacher, he has a different way to instill things into his players. We came from the spring and we were all confused, because he came in with different techniques and everything. Everyone was wondering like ‘Wow, what is this?’ But then we really started to trust it, he showed us it worked, and we’ve stuck with it and we’re improving every single day.”
Would love to hear or read more about the differences and how they've worked on new techniques.

Zion, Vaughn, Gaynor, Scaife, Campbell. People ***** about our oline but how much more talent do you want? These are some pretty highly rated guys/diamonds in the rough. It’s on Butch Barry to make it work. 2nd most talented oline in the acc rankings wise & it prob isn’t close. Most schools would kill for these guys & we act as though they should be a weakness.

Love Campbell's upside, he's a prototype RT at 6'6 310lbs with long arms & can move.

He just needs time for it all to click together, but what stands out about him is his natural strength, he's not getting bullied & can anchor. Technique is still being refined, but as the season progresses he should settle in at that spot.

Once Zion, Big Vaughn, Gaynor, Scaife & Campbell all gel they can be a very solid cohesive unit. One thing I'm confident on is we'll see an improvement on run blocking from this group, pass blocking we'll see, but I believe our run game will look much better in Enos system & with Coach Barry teaching these guys.
Indeed @Liberty City El....100% with you here. We have a young QB and if this young line puts it together, we are set for 3 years and in a good position for a run at our 6th.

For the OL experts out there...

Can Zion and Campbell, size aside, really hold up to DEs a few years older with growth and maturity at this point in their careers?

Speaks volumes these young men are pushing/beating out last year's incumbents...

In my opinion, it seems Coach B prefers lean athletic Tackles with the more bulkier guys in the middle.

When you look at our roster, we really didnt recruit enough lean Tackles with athletic ability/quick feet. We loaded up on guys more suited to play guard/center.

- Scaife can play tackle, but he upgrades our entire OL on the inside, as he gives us a great blend of strength and athleticism on the inside, which speaks to this combination being the best set of 5 for them to slide him inside.
