Canes Baseball filled one of its biggest needs with the addition of Oregon State transfer C Tanner Smith.
Smith is considered an impact defensive catcher with a 54.2% caught stealing rate (13/24) and strong framing skills. He started 95 games for the Beavers and put up a .221/.359/.423 slash line (.782 OPS) with 5 HRs and 19 RBIs.
The Canes struggled defensively last year, with Jack Scanlon only throwing out 24% of runners (6 of 25). Smith is expected to be a major defensive upgrade (one passed ball versus 10 for Scanlon), and was a superior hitter to Scanlon based on their PAC-12 performance.
Smith joins OF Max Galvin, OF Bobby Marsh, OF Derek Williams, 1B Todd Hudson, RHP Griffin Hugus, LHP Rob Evans, RHP Reese Lumpkin, RHP Will Smith and RHP Carson Fischer in Miami’s Portal class.
