Generally an even front defense will line their defensive tackles up at the 1 technique position (between the C and G) and 3 technique position between the G and T on the other side) Usually the 3 technique guy is your playmaker. The guy who gets into the backfield and shoots gaps like an Aaron Donald or Warren Sapp. The 1 technique guy needs to be stout. His main job is to not be moved off his spot. If he can command double teams, even better. He needs to keep both the C and the G occupied and not allow them to move to the second level and block the linebackers. The responsibilities change based on down and distance and personnel packages but every good gap shooting DT has a double team commanding partner who doesn't get any glory. Our issue on the defensive line right now is that we don't have anyone who's proven capable of playing the 1 tech spot. We've got a bunch of 3 tech guys and converted 3/4 DEs playing DT right now. We don't necessarily need that 350 lb NT that a lot of the classic odd front defenses use but we're going to need Jordan Miller or Jake Lichtenstein or someone to play that center/guard gap and he can't be a little guy who gets pushed around.

.
THIS

We’ve got a **** ton of DT/DE hybrids but only Jordan Miller and maybe Haye as our space eaters. We need to be much, much more physical and stout on the interior or we’ll continue to get pushed around by the more physical teams like Wisconsin.

Even if we had another Jon Ford, it would help us tremendously.

Welcome to the year 2022. The best DTs in the world aren't 325# guys. They are 280-300 fast and strong.

We need a 325 pound nose tackle. Purely a 0 & 1 technique whose only job would be to take on double teams.

It's the year 2022, and we still have people thinking players like Warren Sapp grow on trees.

The spring objective for the new staff was about 2 things; instilling the foundation for a strong culture, and seeing what they have to work with.

Our deficiency in size & skill at certain positions was obvious and the coaches will move heaven and earth to revamp them; however I believe the biggest objective that will be addressed aside from talent acquisition is the mastery of fundamentals, (i.e., catching & tackling).

We need defenders wrapping up while driving feet and receivers channeling their inner “Glue Hands” Johnson.
If the army of coaches we have can sharpen these axes then we’ll be chopping wood to a very respectable season.

No I get all that, and I'm not saying you're wrong. I just cringe when I see Duke comparisons. I know you're not saying he's as good as Duke.

I guess it's what your definition of "complete" is. IMO - Chaney is faster than Deejay, but Deejay was bigger, better receiver, more versatile & productive, and more recent.

I probably have a higher opinion of Deejay Dallas than most. My hope for Chaney is he's Deejay with a little more speed. I'd take that all day.

I was hyping DeeJay when most wanted him replaced by Cam. He was so wasted in Enos’ offense.

Don is a better running back IF he stays healthy and returns to form.Little smaller but breaks tackles nearly as well and more long speed. But he won’t catch DeeJay on injured reserve.. I hate him missing reps because this year is when the vision and patience really start to show.

@DMoney what is your take on how UM should progress with QB recruiting?

The free-spending schools are going to continue driving the prices up on each other, and I don't foresee jumping into that pool as a path to success for UM.

For starters, financial resources at UM will never be limitless, it will need to be spread out. We can't have all the money sitting in the QB room, as important as it is.

More importantly, I don't think it's necessary. If you look at the 2019 and 2020 QB classes, they've had a good amount of time to marinate. In 2019, the two top consensus guys were Bo Nix and Spencer Rattler, and I think it is safe to say they underwhelmed.

Clemson signed Taisun Photoboothmackachacah and DJ Urologicaluhoh in 2019 and 2020, respectively. They were both top tier guys and one transferred while the other can't complete a forward pass.

I think we will have more success bypassing the guys looking for NFL Rookie level payouts. There are plenty of very good to excellent QB prospects still looking for the right fit. I'd rather evaluate them and find our guy than chase. That's basically the TVD formula.

We may have to go to the portal to fill in for the years we make the wrong call, because that will happen, but I wouldn't rely on that too heavily because the top transfers are going to cost big money, too. It used to be the 3 star kid from Nowhere, USA who shines at Nowehere U either stayed put until he Grad transferred, but that won't be the case anymore. He will get paid, too.

What is taking place with Resheda is the very definition of 'slippery slope' to those who get involved in that...

I said this to a few folks -- and they agreed -- that we have a group of players that are thinking to themselves now, "So thats what college football really is, geez, that was TOUGH."

I truly believe our players had their eyes opened very wide the past few weeks...

Yeah Miller was holding up well but they were able to shield him away from plays. The other tacklesneed to get better fast though.

I didn’t see as much block eating as I thought I would. On Perry’s called back touchdown, Miller literally swam himself out of the play. I would like to see him with one hand on the guard and the other on the center and protecting the defenders around him. Gattis’ gap blocking is really tough on linebackers.

Especially the receivers and defensive line.

Receivers are facing the most physical coverage they have ever faced. The dts, especially 3T/under tackles, are trying to learn to play with proper pad level and leverage.

Those guys will improve and I think the season will show or ol and secondary are some of the best they will face this season.

If it wasn’t for the safeties, the backs would have been ripping huge runs. The combination Gattis, Mirabel, and Mario is going to produce a devastating run game. We will be all over most teams’ linebackers. It will be glorious.

I'm with you - I was firmly in the Deejay > Cam camp.

My expectations for Chaney coming in was somewhere between Deejay & Lamar Miller. I thought Miller/Starting NFL RB was a very realistic ceiling.

Based on Chaney's FR year, I adjusted my expectations to be more on the Deejay end. Now with his injuries, I'll be happy if he gets to the Deejay level.

IMO how impressive Deejay was right off the bat has gotten lost in the shuffle. He played QB in HS, started at WR at Miami, then had to switch to RB midway through his FR season. And he still he ripped off these 4 games the 2nd half of his FR year.

@k9cane - what is going on with Rashada? Bidding war? Sorry I am in the dark on this one. Thanks as always.

Arkansas throwing their Walmart money at him; they probably need to considering that’s their only path to getting out of the basement in the SEC West. That’s why If Rashada wants to win anything significant, he doesn’t go there…but if he just wants a bag/ is set on playing early in a marquee conference with a multitude of nationally televised games (very realistic) then it makes sense.

Garcia is starting next year anyways, so maybe I’m in the minority…but if we end up “settling” for Moore or someone else, I won’t be too concerned.

K9 is likely referring to offering high school QBs six figure+ NLI deals before they ever set foot on campus. Such lucrative deals could negatively impact the locker room and may be unnecessary given the transfer portal. Teams can “spend” a fraction of what players like Rashada are getting and land a very good transfer QB.

Which is the better route? Secure the 5 star QB who has yet to take a snap and risk losing the locker room and overspending on unproven talent, or use those funds to attract proven players (including a QB) to fill holes on your roster?

It’s like buying a company and paying a multiple on EBITDA. Rashada is a startup and commands a multiple which is sky high based on potential, but he isn’t profitable right now. A transfer QB is a somewhat established company with earnings. The transfer QB will command a much lower multiple (older, less potential, did not earn starting role, etc.), but presents lower risk because of his experience. You can then use the savings to add other companies (players) to your portfolio (team).

Do you roll the dice and hope Rashada is Amazon? Do you mitigate the risk and purchase multiple companies?

In case y'all niqqas forgot

Would love to see this player at Miami. The injuries are piling up. He’s going to have to hop on a moving train and refresh our memories. Competition will be fierce.

Don is RB1 once he returns fully healthy and gets some snaps.
