Do not want.

Wih the number and quality of local WRs available this year, it's crazy to be wasting time and attention on some OOS kid who aint coming here and aint going to be better than all of the local kids we pass on.

That's two different things. I could almost see not wanting to "waste" time on him, but you don't even want the kid? If he committed tomorrow you'd tell him to kick rocks? That doesn't play when it's the #10 player in the country. And as for wasting time, al's not the skipper of this ship so if the kid says he's interested, I believe him.
Al aint the only corch we had who chased rainbows around the country.

And with Pope, Austin, Williams, Thornton, Green, Moore, Wiggins et al local this year, we do not need to govelsewhere and shouldn't. We took Hightower. That's enough non-local kids at WR in one of the best local classes at WR we have seen in a while.

Lot of you guys don't get it, but UM's a national program. We've been "chasing rainbows" and catching them forever. Al even caught a few.
You chase them here and there, now and then, when it makes sense. At WR this cycle, it doesn't make sense, IMO. Not with the local talent available.

And there is a cost to skipping over a top local kid to take an OOS kid (not to mention a risk of decommitment from the OOS kid in January at bag time). Our strength is maximized when we strengthen the talent lines in the local area, and undermined when we pointlessly skip local kids for OOS kids, which inevitably leads to some drama chit down the line.

We have a strategy. We should stick to it. The OOS kid should be at a position of need where we cannot get comparable talent locally, or just an obviously better kid than what we can get locally. Neither fit the WR situation this cycle.
South FL kids don't decommit at Bag time?

Did you miss the offers and local recruitments of Williams, Thornton and Austin? Recruiting Marshall hasn't hindered any of that.
I agree, so far. But it's early, and this is a marshall exchange. How it plays out, we will see. My comment was i'd prefer we focus on local kids this cycle.
I know what your comment was, and it's still misguided. We are focusing on local guys. We have commitments from a bunch of them and offers to several more. Now we're also attempting to reel in a giant out of state fish like we've always done at UM. Rick is perfectly capable of this limited bit of multitasking.

Meh. I dont think it is constructive to our rebuild to chase OSS kids at a position like wr, which is deeper than ever locally, with top talent, and we can get our type of kids.

We are talking serious nfl prospects in pope, austin, wiggins, thornton, maybe a few more locally. Not the situation where you need to chase an OOS kid. If you end up with him, you will hear it from local staffs about taking him over their kid, especially if he aint as good as people think. And you'll lose on a kid froma school we will be tryna build bloodlines at. If we chase him and lose him, similar complaint comin. No need to do this. It's an unforced error. Rebuild the pipelines and bloodlines. Fill in with need kids and the DJ Johnson type who jumps into the boat and grabs an oar. The strategy to getting so fla right and on board runs through so fla.

Serious NFL prospects - "Thornton". Bruh almost nobody knew who that kid was like 2 weeks ago. And now he's a more serious NFL prospect than Terrance Marshall who is a top 3 WR in the country? We have very clearly been prioritizing South Florida. It we can get Marshall we get him, it's as simple as that. I'd rather have the best players we can get. If this was a situation where the OOS guy was basically the same talent level as the local guy, I'd take the local guy every time. But this is a situation where the OOS guy if very clearly more talented than just about every WR in the country.

Having said all that, The chances we pull this kid out of Louisianna don't seem very high to me.

With your line of thinking Jeff Thomas would not be a Cane. You need to realize there are elite players that exist outside of Florida . And you have give them attention they're not just going to "jump into the boat" all the time

"Our type of kids?" Like Reggie Wayne and Ed Reed?

How quickly people forget that we almost completely whiffed on WRs last year before a late double of "let's flip a WVU verbal" and "let's take a chance on an East St. Louis kid with potential academic issues" turned into an amazing bit of good fortune.

Again, I'm not knocking EFFORT. I'm not saying that Dugans got on Harley and Thomas only in the last month or two. But we CLEARLY were targeting other guys, we had not nearly spent the same effort on Thomas, and that's a fact.

Having said that, I have no complaints with making efforts for Terrace (just as some think we should be trying for Justin Fields), but we have to have some sort of a "cut-off" that will not cost us with very talented (even if they are still less talented than certain out-of-staters) kids who are right in our own backyard.

Sure, I'd love to have some ungodly squad of 4 and 5 star kids from across the country. But, historically, our squads of 3-5 star kids from Florida have ended up beating the pants off of everyone else.

If out-of-staters aren't pretty clear on picking Miami very early, it's a LOT of effort to spend when the chances are low. Make the effort, don't bet the farm, though.

Betting the farm on the Jerry Jeudy and Calvin Ridley's of the world has been working well for us.

Just read the Southeast Spotlight article on Rivals following the 5 Star Challenge. There was a section on TM talking about how he needs LSU to prove it can pass the ball this season, or he'll immediately eliminate them. What I found extremely interesting is that the picture of him they used from the event showed him wearing his U bracelet during competition. Seems like this kid is always wearing that U bracelet from what I've seen. I've got no delusions that we're the leader, that has to be LSU until proven otherwise, but I bet we're a close 2nd at worst for him right now. That's huge.

Going to LSU to play WR right now is like going to UM to play Dline during the Golden Era. Its a death wish. You would be stupid. **** those mofos had Beckham AND Landry and still underutilized them.

TMarshall knows it. Freakin Malachi Dupree (#1 WR in the country when he came out) didnt even get drafted!! And he had skills so its not like he was a complete flop.

This kid sounds like a smart kid. Loyalty to the hometown is one thing..blind loyalty is another. (sound familiar? Any local Dlineman during the Golden Era that turned their back on us I have no issues with. Careers were ruined due to that 3-4 scheme)

Lets hope we can show him that we will make him a star at WR if he comes.

I agree, and I think the fact that they have a new HC is the only reason why he's even considering them right now.

Even though we never came close to whiffing (unless I'm misunderstanding u) I'm curious if you realize the reason we were in that late wait & see more was because we were waiting on the local kid... again I'm not trying to attack. A lil off on the context of your message. Can't tell if youre supporting or not in going after marshall. (Its early in the am here so excuse the blondness) if jerry jeudy wouldve been the louisina kid last year & devonta was the local kid what then?

I also grew tired of chasing Louisiana/Georgia elite pipe dreams but only when they're being recruited as options 1,2, and 3 as in years past. Last year was a classic example of this - we were chasing Georgia and Louisiana pipe dreams as our 2-3 top options and we were left scrambling. We almost botched the Harley recruitment and thank goodness, Kool already had a relationship with Thomas and his school.

Now, if we already have a solid 3 (local) options in the fold and feel real good about 1 other, I see no harm in going after the big fish, albeit in SEC country.

Let me see if I can add the right context.

By "whiffed", I meant that one month before National Signing Day, at an OBVIOUS position of need, we had one guy committed (whose brother was also on the roster).

I'm not saying we didn't make a great effort on guys, or that guys had us at #2 on their list. Lots of baseball players make great swings at the ball and miss by a fraction of an inch. That's a "whiff". Whether you miss the baseball by an inch or a foot, it's still a whiff. But I also understand and respect what you are saying.

My point was simple. If we also missed by a fraction of an inch with Harley and Thomas, we are staring at one of the worst outcomes EVER in our WR recruiting. But we connected with those two, and we salvaged a good class.

I do get what you are saying. I do believe there are times when you can "wait on the local kid" (one of whom was Harley). But when you are desperate at a particular position, and you are one month from NSD, I think you might have to abandon the "waiting on the local kid" scenario. Hey, maybe you and I won't agree on that one point, but I think we are both veterans of watching years and years of this recruiting game, and it's tough to have a hard-and-fast rule that covers all scenarios.

I'm fine with making an effort with Terrace Marshall, but that is NOW, with 3 verbals 8 months prior to NSD. And I'm fine with taking maybe 1 more WR than ordinary because we could have taken 4 last year.

Bottom line is this. If we are waiting on a 5-star kid, and he is looking at one or more schools to see what they do during the year, then I'm not sure how many chips to bet. Because we might have a pure freshman starting. We might play multiple QBs this year. If this was a situation where Kaaya was here, even though he will graduate, and even though some people think he is imperfect, at least the kid could see what our passing offense can look like in his hands.

That's all. I love that "chance" of getting Marshall, but will he see what he needs to see out of the UM offense? Because if that might be doubtful, maybe we just stick with the local kids who love us, and try to pull some out-of-staters next year.

I don't think there is any "one right answer" here, I'm just expressing my opinion. I just think, sometimes, some of our posters fall into the "momentum" argument and want us to get "everyone". I'm still a bit cautious, I don't know how long we should chase out-of-state blue chippers. Makes me nervous when we have a pretty good local kid who, reportedly, has tried to commit three times.

Love talking with you, dee.

If he paid any attention to Pitts offense with Canada he shouldn't be too hesitant, honestly. With LA athletes in that system they can be scary. Only thing holding them back is that clown at HC

Canada will make a huge difference there. He does like to run the ball a lot though. Only positive for us is that they still have **** at QB, so even a great OC might struggle.

One thing recruits don't realize or appreciate is that if Canada gets that offense turned around he'll be a HC befor Marshall ever has a chance to play for him.

With your line of thinking Jeff Thomas would not be a Cane. You need to realize there are elite players that exist outside of Florida . And you have give them attention they're not just going to "jump into the boat" all the time

Let me see if I can add the right context.

By "whiffed", I meant that one month before National Signing Day, at an OBVIOUS position of need, we had one guy committed (whose brother was also on the roster).

I'm not saying we didn't make a great effort on guys, or that guys had us at #2 on their list. Lots of baseball players make great swings at the ball and miss by a fraction of an inch. That's a "whiff".

Kool. Now understanding perfectly what your saying I can add to this. #1 the local kid in Elijah Moore we basically need to get out of our heads... It's gonna take ALOT for him to be a take for us. #2 what makes the situation with Marshall perfect for this year more so than any other is were perfectly content to close this class with the 3 receivers we already have in place. A fourth one is simply a perk that honestly our current wr unit is already expressing concerns about (can't elaborate)were not gonna settle this year for that 4 spot. It's gonna be a kid we really like. As of now first two options are x & Marshall. As of paradise if x situation doesn't change with bama it will change with us. That's the only other reason were cultivating more relationships. It's gonna be a race between a few prospects for that 4 spot. If we miss oh well we just move on to 19.well be fine. Sad **** is probably one of the top 3 receivers in state who no one speaks of that would kill to be a cane (eskridge) doesn't have a prayer in **** cause he's dumb as a box of rocks.

It's seems like if LSU passing game fails again this year as expected and Marshall makes it back for paradise and we roll the red carpet until signing day we have a good chance he comes

Marshall smelling a little like that faqqit Hollowman from GA last year. Both are guys wanted by the local school.

But we don't really need a 4th WR this year anyway. So I say shoot for the moon on that 4th spot.
