I never thought I see the day when us Canes fans would be so happy to get a bunch of 2 or no star recruits (I know one is a 4 and Mike is a 3 but the majority are unknowns). Don't get me wrong I love the momentum but I'm tired of all the 4 and 5 star recruits in our backyard (who grew up Miami fans) going somewhere else. It's sad that these Miami,Immokalee, Ft. Lauderdale 4 and 5 star kids don't realize that if they all stayed home and Played for Miami they would never lose a college game. Instead they spread all across the Nation and only a lucky few get to bring a National Title to someone elses home.

Yup. I want to get back to years like 08 when we landed all the 4 and 5 star kids in our backyard and it led to multiple championships.

**** this fence around South Florida ****. Its a Pipedream.

1. Nevin landed most of those kids, not randy
2. If that class of 08 had a half capable coach, we would be looking at it very differently

"Every February there’s a frenzy of hype as a fresh new recruiting class for every college football program is announced, with hope springing eternal From Fan Base X that this group of incoming freshman will push Team X over the top. Or keep them there.

Nearly three months later, the drill is repeated at the NFL, with the draft signaling a new day has dawned for woebegone franchises as fans cling to any sliver of hope that this is the draft that will turn things around. (In Cleveland, this is commonly referred to as “our Super Bowl”.)

Does one in any way, shape or form relate to the other, though? Not particularly, but the numbers are nonetheless (mildly) intriguing.

Counting last night’s opening segment, there have been 128 players selected during the first round of the NFL draft the past four years. Interestingly, there have been nearly as many two-star-or-lower players* selected in the first round between 2009 and 2012 (20) as there have been five-star prospects (23). The latter’s numbers are somewhat skewed, however, as there were just 120 recruits given four-star ratings between 2006-09. For comparison, there were more than 900 recruits — may be more than 1,000; I didn’t go beyond the Rivals250 — who received a four-star rating during the same time frame.

Continuing down that same path, where the NFL really finds the bulk of its players, however, is in the other two ratings slots.

In those four years, nearly 40 percent of the first-round selections (51) came into the collegiate ranks as four-star recruits. Three-star recruits have a significant impact as well, with 33 of those players over the four years taken in the first round. All told, nearly 66 percent of the players taken in the first round since 2009 have been three- or four-star recruits.

If you’re looking to become the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, however, the brighter the hue of the blue-chip player coming into college, the better the odds are that recruit will hear his name called first by the commissioner. Of the eight No. 1 overall picks since 2005, six have either been four-star — Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, 2012; Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long, 2008; LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, 2007; North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams, 2006 — or five-star — Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, 2011; Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, 2009 — prospects in their respective recruiting classes.

The only No. 1 overall pick who fell outside that rarefied star air? Utah quarterback Alex Smith, who parlayed a two-star entry into college football into being the first pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2005 NFL draft.

(Writer’s note: Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford was a three-star prospect and the top pick of the 2010 draft)

Below is a year-by-year breakdown of the first round of the NFL draft:

2012
5-star — 4
4-star — 13
3-star — 10
2-star — 4

2011
5-star — 7
4-star — 11
3-star — 11
2-star — 3

2010
5-star — 6
4-star — 15
3-star — 6
2-star — 5

2009
5-star — 6
4-star — 12
3-star — 6
2-star — 7

(*Brandon Weeden, selected by the Cleveland Browns at No. 22 overall, was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2002 and played professional baseball through 2006. He enrolled at Oklahoma State in 2007 as a “no-star recruit”.)"

I know this is NFL and not college based, but 3 stars are nothing to be overlooked on, yes the greats are usually recognized from their early on days...But to say that miami is not good because we are getting plenty of three star recruits is ridiculous. It's not as if we are striking out left and right on the major ones, the coaches are making informed decisions on these players after camps and offering to those who they know can contribute WHILE many big time recruits are still available

Be careful with Arkansas... In this.. Love the article, but def still skeptic. I would still love to see Valentine, Clark, Lammons, Patten, Michael/ and it cook, lane, Dixon, Rudolph ..... There's too much talent still uncommitted and were taking in other players....

Also DT Holley, OT KNOX, FB Gresham, DE Chad Thomas..... Better
Talent but we def don't have enough room in this class for all these guys which is tough to swallow..

If I know nothing else about a kid I take 4* and 5* every time. Their probability of success is significantly higher than others.

If my full time job is evaluating talent, I rely on my own evaluations to offer players, which will often align with their star rankings but not always.

We aren't getting all of the highly rated players we want...yet. Therefore the coaches rely on their evaluations to take the next best kids on the board and a few with higher upsides and also higher bust potential than some three stars, who are maxed out physically. As we win and don't having looming sanctions, we move up the food chain. Seems pretty simple to me and I would say the majority of people on this board get that. What is taking the others so long?

Wasn't Sony Michel set to be a Cane his sophomore year in high school....

you probably would have said the same thing about Ed Reed back in the day. One of the greatest Safeties to ever play the game. He was only a 2 star out of lowly LA. I sure am glad he bacame a Cane!

My point is that I dont understand how we let all these kids go to other schools. It's not the parents, Collins mom ran out the door with his Letter of Intent from Arkansa because she wanted him to stay here. Golden is the Man and now we have Coley but with all that said we have to stop the bleeding. Mathew Thomas to FSU,Collins to Arkansa,Sony to Georgia,etc,etc,etc....All these 4 and 5 star recruits from here waiting to take visits and at the last moment going somewhere else its ridiculous. We go to these kids practices for 2 years, go to most of their games,go to their schools, they come to all Golden's camps and at signing day they go somewhere else where they will sit. And I still dont get how DT Bryant went to FSU last year when he could have started for us this year. FSU DL line is loaded with ridiculous talent and they're young. Bryant won't sniff the field until year 3 at FSU. What is it that all these DL 4 and 5 star kids would rather go and sit 2 years at another school then start for Miami as soon as they come on campus. I love Golden but something ain't right here.

Miami hasn't had a solid winning season in the past how many years? All the schools you listed above (minus maybe Arkansas) has had just that. We also have the huge black cloud hanging over us right now called the NCAA investigation. Dudes want to play in bowl games and they aren't sure they can do that at the U. Trust me, I want all of these bad *** ballers to play at the U also. But bring yourself back to reality here. What is the draw, honestly?

Al has done an excellent job with all the bull**** he inherited so far. When we start winning again, they'll come back.

Can we just enjoy the fact that we are in good shape with a top 2016 kid

" because I want my parents to see me and I don’t want to go too far"

I am glad to see geography lessons have been stepped up at BTW after the Matthew Thomas incident
