Coaching Underperforming Recruiters on Staff (aka Deadweight according to Feldman)

When the staff was brought on last year, some of the coaches had a well deserved reputation for being great recruiters. Then a few months back, @Cribby dropped a bombshell, he said something to the effect that this was a "Meh" recruiting staff. Only Mario and DVD were pulling their weight recruiting. That's right. Everyone except Mario and DVD.

Found Cribby's quotes:

I don’t think there’s anybody on staff I’d lose sleep over if they departed. Mario is the key cog and TVD / Cooney on the off field staff. It’s actually a quite meh recruiting staff.
Remember when somebody here said” there was only a couple people carrying their weight with recruiting and it’s surprising a Mario staff would lack great recruiters”
I was shocked by this staff when it was announced. I expected an avengers type recruiting staff , It ended up being Mario and the averagers

I was scratching my head at that one, even to the point of wondering if Cribby knew what he was talking about. Just too many alpha recruiters on this staff for that to be true. Subsequent to that, I've gotten confirmation that Cribby was 100% correct. And then Feldman drops the "dead weight" description of the staff. We know that what Feldman reports is coming from Mario. He doesn't make stuff up from unnamed sources.

My bad Cribby, I didn't want to believe it was true, but it was. Sometimes the medicine doesn't taste good, but you've got to take it anyway.

In this thread, we'll track the new coaching hires and see how they compare from a recruiting standpoint.

Clear Recruiting Upgrades

  • Nicholson over Strong (based on current results, not previous year's reputation)

Push

  • TBD

Clear Recruiting Downgrades

  • TBD
When Feldman did the podcast with Navarro last week, he intimated guys with big names not pulling their weight, perhaps culturally not fitting here in Miami the way they did in Oregon.

My thought immediately went to Big Joe.

If that’s the case, if we could somehow get Charlie Partridge, would be amazing but I don’t see that happening.

My guess is big Joe sticks around for 1 more year at most or if he’s going to go, probably needs to happen by this weekend, early next week.

I've called for Partridge for so long, I think triceratops was still in my garage.

The relationship with the Mauigoa's will keep him here in some capacity IMO

Man, @Cribby has been dropping bread crumbs about how badly this staff underperformed from a recruiting standpoint. I missed a couple of these hints

Which is crazy considering how well we finished up with this 23’ class. But also wonder 💭 ” Well **** how much more better we could’ve done.

Except for Mario, the situation at Miami will be very liquid, both players and staff. I hope Mario continues to go younger coaches or hires coaches that have a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. Guys like Strong, show you they have a high sense of entitlement and neither has a chip nor is hungry. The Miami job may be too much of a rebuild for some of these guys that came in and earned a paycheck on reputation. Strong went from hungry as UF's DC, hit his apex at Louisville but has been mediocre to terrible since. Steel made a smart lateral move to Bama, they already have the Jimmy and Joe's, while we just started bringing them in. Gattis two years removed from a Broyles and Michigan didn't fight to keep him and I have not heard his name being mentioned anywhere. Probably headed to Bama for a "off field specialist" position making 40K. I don't blame Smith, that was his best job so far and Ponce went back to his prior gig which is considered a "promotion."
Players leaving. Coaches leaving. All part of the process. one year into Cristobal. I am totally fine with this. Come in hungry and get to work. The bar is low (5-7).
Why didn't Mario have Former HC Kevin Sumlin on his OC list?

Is Rod Wright next on the list? Didn’t generate much of a pass rush and most of the edge recruits mentioned Taylor a lot more than him.

Wouldn’t be shocked if Taylor is elevated to take his spot. It seemed taylor was always the first name mentioned with recruits…. Other than maybe or two Texas kid who didn’t end up coming I don’t feel like Wright had any buzz

We finished 7th place which is only one spot higher than Mark Richt’s best class here.

In 2024, we have no commits, and we’re not leading for any 5 star players so far. Recruiting is not going well

It seems Mario is hellbent on recruiters. So is a Hall of Famer with a family want to get in the weeds & hustle 17-18 year olds & handlers? Guess is not likely.

Mario wanted to stabilize the ship with proven experience in year 1. That resulted in dusty entitled staff that didn't want to recruit. Plainly put, it failed. Even if things had gone great on the field a guy like Steele or Strong was a short term band aid and not a long term solution.

Year 2 is now here, Mario has been able to fully assess the program and roster. He's now building a younger, hungrier staff with higher upside.
Yeah, that is correct but it’s retrospective. Like you said, we never expected it to be to long term but there is a chasm the size of the Grand Canyon between 1 year and long term. With the turnover we are having after year 1, that’s not moving on to step two, that’s systemic failure. All we can do is see how it plays out, but from the outside looking in this would be 400+ pages on a rival’s Canes Tears.
