When the staff was brought on last year, some of the coaches had a well deserved reputation for being great recruiters. Then a few months back, @Cribby dropped a bombshell, he said something to the effect that this was a "Meh" recruiting staff. Only Mario and DVD were pulling their weight recruiting. That's right. Everyone except Mario and DVD.

Found Cribby's quotes:

I don’t think there’s anybody on staff I’d lose sleep over if they departed. Mario is the key cog and TVD / Cooney on the off field staff. It’s actually a quite meh recruiting staff.
Remember when somebody here said” there was only a couple people carrying their weight with recruiting and it’s surprising a Mario staff would lack great recruiters”
I was shocked by this staff when it was announced. I expected an avengers type recruiting staff , It ended up being Mario and the averagers

I was scratching my head at that one, even to the point of wondering if Cribby knew what he was talking about. Just too many alpha recruiters on this staff for that to be true. Subsequent to that, I've gotten confirmation that Cribby was 100% correct. And then Feldman drops the "dead weight" description of the staff. We know that what Feldman reports is coming from Mario. He doesn't make stuff up from unnamed sources.

My bad Cribby, I didn't want to believe it was true, but it was. Sometimes the medicine doesn't taste good, but you've got to take it anyway.

In this thread, we'll track the new coaching hires and see how they compare from a recruiting standpoint.

Clear Recruiting Upgrades

  • Nicholson over Strong (based on current results, not previous year's reputation)

Does anyone have info on Kevin Smith's recruiting while at Miami?

Edit: @Cribby says it was a mixed bag. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. We did whiff on a bunch of key RBs last cycle.

Have heard from a couple sources that Strong's recruiting wasn't meeting Mario's expectations, some might even say mailing it in.
I feel like that is why you put someone like Strong as an analyst or you hire him with the expectation that there will be other strong (no pun intended) recruiters on the staff to make up for it. I know the latter is not how Mario operates, but I just can't imagine being Strong's age, a former head coach who is now a LBs coach having to suck up to high school kids.

Man, @Cribby has been dropping bread crumbs about how badly this staff underperformed from a recruiting standpoint. I missed a couple of these hints

Except for Mario, the situation at Miami will be very liquid, both players and staff. I hope Mario continues to go younger coaches or hires coaches that have a chip on their shoulder and something to prove. Guys like Strong, show you they have a high sense of entitlement and neither has a chip nor is hungry. The Miami job may be too much of a rebuild for some of these guys that came in and earned a paycheck on reputation. Strong went from hungry as UF's DC, hit his apex at Louisville but has been mediocre to terrible since. Steel made a smart lateral move to Bama, they already have the Jimmy and Joe's, while we just started bringing them in. Gattis two years removed from a Broyles and Michigan didn't fight to keep him and I have not heard his name being mentioned anywhere. Probably headed to Bama for a "off field specialist" position making 40K. I don't blame Smith, that was his best job so far and Ponce went back to his prior gig which is considered a "promotion."
Players leaving. Coaches leaving. All part of the process. one year into Cristobal. I am totally fine with this. Come in hungry and get to work. The bar is low (5-7).

This has been talked about numerous times already.

We finished #1 ACC and #6 nationally (on3) so the recruiting isn’t the issue.

We finished 7th place which is only one spot higher than Mark Richt’s best class here.

In 2024, we have no commits, and we’re not leading for any 5 star players so far. Recruiting is not going well

We went 5-7 and got rid of both OC/DC lol
this class needs some commits though

On 247 sure but not on ESPN and on3

Also better class than richts if you compare both

Yeah - it's panic time to be sure.

2024 recruits are waiting to see if all these UFO's we're shooting down get ticked off and decide to invade. No use picking a team in places that may not exist by then.

I would include Field as somebody who’s pulling his weigh. He snagged 2of the best YEs in the country early and kept them even though they both were on the other sides of the countr but yea this staff severely underwhelmed on the trail and Mario had to take over to get his guys. I believe a partial reason that we didn’t see Gattis lose playcalling privileges is because Mario was so wrapped in recruiting he couldn’t get involved in something else.

The issue isn't where we finished in the rankings. The issue is we did it with most of the staff not contributing. If everyone was living up to expectations, the results likely would've been better.
