Zambians + the OP salute Mario for yet again, uh, HARPOONING THE WHALE in Mensah, and the 2025 Team for taking us to the gates of THE PROMISED LAND!

Did they kill the hippo or was it already dead?

Assuming they killed it, how is that even possible considering their hide is so thick? Is that a cross bow in your hands?
And can they eat it? Seems like is mostly fat, like eating a whale

So many questions
I debated for several days posting what I knew could be a controversial pic. But, the relative anonymity enjoyed here - along with the heaps of testosterone - AND Mario's landing a "whale" proved too irresistible as the hippo is indeed a first cousin to the whale...so, you are spot on.

Not controversial in my opinion.
Hippos have no natural enemy and as others have mentioned, kill more Africans, where they are indigenous, than even Crocs.

An elephant would have been a different story.

Rock on!
Go Canes!

I thought that was rhinos...
Hippos. Rhinos are extremely threatened as a species and not generally aggressive.
We have Rhinos here at Busch Gardens, they are free roam in the Serengeti area and walk right up to the train or the excursion land rovers. All of the potentially dangerous animals are not in the free roam area I.e., Hippos, Tigers, hyenas, lions, gorillas, chimps, Gators, Crocs etc.

My guess is its exactly like a whale. While you can eat parts there is a ton of fat but I doubt any of this animal goes to waste. They can likely use the fat for oil, soap, traditional medicine, fuel for fires for cooking/warmth.

I imagine the teeth also get traded and the hide can likely be tanned into something as well.

I respectfully don’t think this was very controversial. Of course there is a line of thought that killing any animal for anything other than sustenance is wrong, and I can understand that. But I am confident that the Zambians will use every part of the animal as @Cookie917 noted.

And a hippo doesn’t exactly qualify as trophy hunting. Which is purely for sport and money. I don’t have a lot of admiration for people who kill big animals by standing 500 yards away and shooting a rifle. A compound bow to kill a hippo; well that is another story altogether.

Agreed. I dont think it is controversial, especially on this board. Post it on some PETA board and different story but also agree much different than the dentist paying 50k to sit in a comfy tree blind in a preserve that is stocked with animals and a high powered rifle with a scope that my 7 year old could make a 200 yard shot with ease.

This is different on so many levels.

Yep. I shot this hippo at 22 yds...
