Now that we've had a night to sleep on it and the dust has settled, what is your assessment of yesterday's game? What scores would you give our team in the following categories? Here are mine (note that scores of Offense & Defense are of our players execution, effort, etc. and not play calling)
HC: Mario had the team ready in the sense that they look like they belonged on the same field as a formidable SEC opponent in tough road conditions. The team showed grit and stayed relatively disciplined but also showed some immaturity & growing pains. Some head scratching game & time management: C +
OC: I'm no football guru but somethings wrong with the play calling & schemes where we travel to the red zone so many times, vastly out perform the opponent in total yardage, have strong OL play, give up zero sacks, have the opponent's secondary so drained by suspensions & ejections and we still can't score a Touch down? Really disappointing play calling but if were able to build off the performance and improve at all on pass game & redzone finishing we could be a force. D +
DC: Kevin Steele had the boys ready to play and seemed to always dial up the right amount of pressure to keep their offense mostly at bay. Not much to say here, great performance all around with a few things to cleanup. A
QB: TVD didn't have a great game but had his receivers gave him more to work with his completion % and the score line would be looking a lot better. For the most part showed decent ability to scramble, make a pass under pressure, and take care of the rock but his passes longer than 15 yds and even some on shorter routes looked suspect last night. Hope he can shake this off and begin to work back into the form he was in at the end of last season. C +
Offense The offense was a mixed bag but its hard for me to know how much to blame on player execution vs play calling. OLine and run game looked strong for the most part with obviously the pass game letting us down. Mallory is a warrior. Our last possession of the game & the dropped pass was pretty representative of the night. Lots to build off with the total yards we racked up, if we can become more clinical in red zone & passing I see good things in the future. B -
Defense Defense came to play and kept us in the game. Awesome work all around with the only nitpick that we didn't force any takeaways. A -
Special Teams: 2 missed Field Goals, muffed punt return, illegal formation penalty followed by not recovering their fumbled return. Lots of missed opportunities here but a good performance at least by Lou Hedley as always. D
