The one area of the team that unequivocally needs to be coached better is Special Teams. Hartley is not getting it done and it is not even close.
How many KO & Punt Returns went for TDs this season? Worse still, how many KO & Punt Returns looked like they would result in a long return (more than 15 yards). The answer is very, very few.
Berrios (a great Cane that we're lucky to have) is sure handed but way too conservative returning punts. He left a lot of yards on the table. Our past greats were waaay more aggressive on punt returns.
JT is fast but runs in a straight line to the same spot every time. How hard is it to coach him to mix it up a little? Blocking: you telling me a team located in South Florida can't find ten guys to block the crap out of opponents so we can get some long returns going? That's ridiculous.
How about using Garvin and others to get some blocked FGs & punts. They are tall & rangy. Let's go. Let's get some production here.
Feagles is probably taught primarily by his father (who knows way more about punting than Hartley ever will). However, we should bring another punter on board just in case. It is waaay too big a risk if the young Feagles can't turn it around. This alone could cost us 2-4 games next year. THIS HAS TO BE FIXED AS IT'S GENUINELY A MAJOR PROBLEM RN.
Hope we have a good replacement for Badge. He's been great overall.
Special teams are incredibly important for determining field position. We used to dominate on special teams in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Frank Beamer (a very accomplished coach) placed tremendous emphasis on this area at Va Tech because he knew how critical the battle for field position was. If you have superior special teams and a great defense, it makes it super hard for the opponent to accomplish much.
Special teams are woefully deficient right now. This has to be fixed!
