This. His issue is recruiting. Given good players, he generally fields a solid defense. Notice how far south his defense got once the players he recruited here started taking over.

Year one is usually good for any OC or DC. Some exceptions apply, but year two and three is where you're tested as people then attack what you did prior while you do the same since it worked. Can Manny adapt, I'm not sure we've seen that. Most coaches don't adapt or gameplay very well. You get used to what works and your ego makes you lazy thinking it'll work again.

As for what he's done this year, good for him. No hate here. You play with what you've got and play who's on the schedule. No doubt Franklin has a hand in it as well.
