I thought this was a really good read.

Oklahoma hired Jim Nagy as a formal GM with a ton of power. Not sure if we need to do it the same way, but having a fully built-out staff is obviously mandatory to be competitive nowadays.

Crazy stat -- "Football generates, directly or indirectly, about three-fourths of Oklahoma’s $200 million annual athletic budget"

Here's a gifted article link: https://www.wsj.com/sports/football...a?st=LFoJy9&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

Nagy was unlike any other GM working in the college game. At OU, he is equal in rank to coach Brent Venables. The change was a dramatic departure from the archetype of the all-powerful football coach, whose dominion extended from the playbook to high-school recruiting.

Nagy oversees a staff that includes 10 full-time scouts, whose responsibilities include analyzing upcoming opponents, evaluating possible transfer portal entrants, as well as monitoring high-school recruits. In this way, it mirrors the way NFL teams divide tasks between a pro personnel department and a college scouting staff.

“In the NFL we very clearly realized that there’s a benefit to specialization,” Rosenberg said. “And when you talk about coaches who want to do everything or have control of everything, that has proven to not be a model that is successful.”

So far the partnership seems to be working. Nagy’s staff includes front-office veterans with experience in contract negotiations and pro scouting, taking over responsibilities from Venables, freeing up the coach to do more actual coaching.

Elite programs mirror this or some variation. If not, you’re falling behind. It used to be called an Arms Race - programs competed to see who could throw the most money at facilities to impress recruits. Players can get paid so no longer a big deal. Again, you adjust to the times or doomed to mediocrity. Good news is Canes are fully engaged & back in the game.

They lose this weekend if Mateer doesn’t play.

All these titles, GM’s etc are great and help. But in the end you need certain things on every great team.

Oklahoma is good with Mateer…without Mateer they are closer to 8-4
Two weeks out from surgery. They have put him as "probable" on their final availability report. Interesting...

Mario and Venables are very different style coaches. The support staff that BV has is what Mario specializes on and is able identify.

He requires maybe the same level of support, but on the sideline and in the booth (he has it this year).

This works great if HC and GM are aligned and get along, which is uncommon since you're dealing with high pressure decisions, tons of money, and competition.

However, its much more likely when 2 people share power that they dont get along, and things can go sideways fast. Just ask the Romans at the Battle of Cannae what it was like when two people who are not aligned share power.
