Would fans really be content with a coordinator hire?

I've spent a considerable amount of time reading all the coaching suggestions on this board and outside of Butch Davis suggestions a lot of people bring up coordinators to run a program.

In college football's history how many coordinators have made the transition from coordinator to a very successful head coach at a top program? I ask this because wouldn't you want a coach with a body of work to judge on instead of an unknown?

We haven't won 10 games since 2003. We probably won't win 10 this year and our previous coaches were Randy Shannon(supposedly a top DC) and Larry Coker(supposedly a top OC) and most people want a coordinator with no track record of head coaching success? Unless you can see into the future, we'd experience the same growing pains like every other hire we've made in the past 10 years.

Lets look at examples.

Will Muschamp- As a DC, had all the defensive superlatives most of you guys point out with guys like Pruitt and Narduzzi, but is about to be out of a job this year and has no continuity with coordinators. Its been the same as Shannon's selection of coordinators.

Jimbo Fisher- An exception but it's a gamble.

Bob Stoops- An exception but it's a gamble.

Charlie Weis at ND- One of the top OCs in the NFL. We know how he turned out.

Mark Richt- Has had success at UGA but would you want our next hire to have his kind of career here?

Mike Shula- Bust

Chip Kelly- An exception but it's a gamble. Comparable to a Philip Montgomery or Chad Morris.

Dana Holgorsen- Wouldn't say he got a gig at a top school but is another example of a high-powered offensive guy.

Overall, my point is that in our position we shouldn't be taking high risks on proven coordinators but unproven head coaches. At this stage, we need a guy with experience. A guy whose had success at a lesser program but obviously will never win championships at that school which is the route top coordinators should take.

How about Butch as temporary DC (Head Coach in waiting), Chud as OC.

I know that's a dream scenario, so insert your own favorite names.

Well, I've argued why I wouldn't want Butch Davis with Cane Dynasty but what is the obsession with people here wanting "Miami" guys, a guy who knows how to recruit south florida, or understands the "culture" etc. Who gives a f*ck?

I've seen guys post a staff comprised completely of Miami alums. Ed Reed as DB coach, Ken Dorsey as OC etc. I just don't get why.

Can it really be any worse than what we currently have? Will gladly roll the dice.

Hire the entire staff from North Dakota State and I'd be happy. They've won their last 5 games against FBS schools. Iowa State and Kansas State the last two years. Their new head coach this year was their DC, and his D is always sick. I'd be giddy if we went out on a limb and hired a staff that WINS, even against better so called talent.

I'm proud of our D. 336 yards to ANY Petrino team is an accomplishment. They kept us in the game, and gave us a great chance to win. Our O ripped out their hearts, and the hearts of our fans. Not so much our O, but the putrid play calling by the staff. I doubt the players on O were any less heart broken. :(
Mondays defense with a Jedd Fisch offense would have gotten us a W.

That's because you are a loser. Your post reads like this: "But but guysm at least we didn't get our asses totally stretched out by Petrino"

The University of Miami: Where giving up 350 yards and 24 points is considered "Good"

Had the O done more, do you really think they get 24? Their last drive was against a tired D who looked as though they had given up. Our D played way better than the Coach D haters will ever admit. Now, if Louisville goes out and averages 150 yards a game the rest of the year, you can say they shredded us. I'd bet we just held them to one of their lowest totals of the season.

With a better offense maybe they have less opportunity to get that 350 and 24.. If you watched game, there's no way you can argue the defense didnt play well enough to win the game.

Maybe if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle.

How was it that we were able to win games in the mid 2000's, soley on defense, when our offense was even more putrid than it is now?

Because according to you and ThomasM, if your offense sucks, you can't expect to have a dominant defense.

How on earth did we manage to field the #6 defense (or was it 7) in 2006, when we had Brian Monroe playing WR?

If Butch was running his own scheme and Chud his own offense without Al micro management, Al could stay and kiss the babies and coach special teams.

Pal, you have no idea who I am, but a loser I am not. I call it like I see it. Our D gave our O the ball twice inside the 15, and we get 3 points. We converted how many third downs? What was the time of possession? Yet you still think the D was the problem? Come on now. It's not like Virginia Tech just put 600 yards on us, again. 336 is such a massive improvement. Had our O not been so pathetic, we'd have probably given up less than 300 and come away with a huge win. This game was ALL ON THE OFFENCE, and if you can't see it then you are the fool.

Ok so there is a good amount of coordinators that worked out. Of course there is risk just like there would be taking a successful coach from a crappy conference. And dont even think about getting a successful coach from a top team as we dont have the money to even talk to them. Judge the next coach on his personality, attitude, philosophy etc

Probably because its so noticeable the disconnect these Yankees have with the kids. Just using his name as an example ( no I don't want him as head coach, lol), but don't you think a guy like Ice can relate and get these kids to play their heart out? A lot of football is passion and emotion. It seems obvious to me these kids don't really click with Golden's Yankee ways.

Let's not act like Louisville didn't have a few drops that made defense look better, not to mention they had a RS freshman QB and missing their best offensive player. If Louisville is held to 12, we win, no other way around it. Our defense only looked good b/c u compare it to last year's WOAT defense.

Sounds like Al Golden.

Also, there isn't a good amount. There is a small sample size because Texas, USC, OSU etc don't hire coordinators to become head coaches. Top coordinators should go to lesser schools and show success like Urban Meyer, Charlie Strong, Gus Malzahn, Kevin Sumlin etc.
