Would Butch be the best possible hire?

I think we need to ask ourselves that question before we continue calling for him. He's good, but I think there are some question marks and better options.

Would he he be able to replicate what he did in the 90s/00s?
How long would he take to turn things around and how long are people willing to wait?

I think there are a couple coaches that are the real deal that we should look at ahead of Butch. Sure he's done it before but his returning is no guarantee of success.

Theres a lot of nostalgia with Butch but I'm afraid it may not be so easily replicated as many of think.

his eye for talent is second to none. but that isn't even why I think Butch is the best option. I think he realizes that he'll need to surround himself with a coaching staff that is COMPETENT, hungry, and aggressive. Butch also has a huge chip on his shoulder. He is hungry to finish what he started here.

Butch is the answer fellas. No one else.

yes

So long as Butch is able to put together a great staff (Xs and Os) then I think we can contend for a national title within 3-4 years. If we hire Butch we need to make sure he has the resources ($$) to put together a top staff.

The answers to your questions have been posted by many members on this board in more than one thread already. Just scroll down and read.

Hey, MAYBE someone else could do the job, but NOBODY this side of 6 or 7 million a year would be the instant jump start Butch carries with him. We instantly level the playing field in recruiting. Butch's 1st round cred can balance off the bag men running around for SEC, OSU and FSU. His ability to identify assistants for staff who later get NFL NC jobs means a bunch too. I think Butch had 3 -- if you are an assistant somewhere, do you think you tell Butch to call back later or answer the phone "What's up Boss?" Butch means $$$$. $$$ to players in draft. $$$ to coaches in career. $$$ to THE U in tickets and sales. $$$$ to ACC in playoffs and NC and ratings for next TV contract.

BOT stripped itself of options by waiting to long. Not even Chud or Greg are viable now. Only Butch can save this recruiting year and stop the sinkhole the BOT caused.

yep for sure. I also strongly believe that Butch is a perfect fit "culturally" for Miami. He understands the city and fanbase very well. He knows that South Florida kids are aggressive in high school, and he'll match their talent with scheme.

Not 100% sure it's the best but I think it would be the safest. He can instantly come in and get the recruiting ball rolling due to familiarity of the sofla landscape. Naturally the players have changed but I think he can acclimatize himself quickly to the recruiting scene, whereas an OOSer might not. I think he has a proven track record of putting together pretty good staffs and that's not a sure bet if you hire a Herman or Fuente or another. Third, he's been around the game so there's not so much of a learning curve for a top tier program, and lastly, he's done it before. that doesn't mean he'll do it again, but it at least gives him a blueprint of what he needs to do to get there.

NVA what confidence do you have that our administration and BOT could identify a national championship caliber coach not named Butch Davis? Butch didn't win an MNC, but he made it possible for us to win multiple MNCs if we had had competent coaching. Butch is an easy and obvious choice because of his track record, but for the sake of argument who are those candidates that you think might be available and what would make them a better hire than Butch?

Some thoughts:

* First, it would be a signal to the south Florida fan base that they're voice is being heard. It would give Blake James the ability to grab the mic and say, "Your guy is here. Now show your asses up to every game!..."

* Im not sure you can find anyone with Butch's resume for the money that UM will likely have available for the a head coach.

* Butch, while likely past his prime will have instant street cred with the local south Florida high school coaches. The value of this cannot be over-stated.

* Hiring Butch will negate any possible negative recruiting tactics that FSU, uf, ohio state, bama, UGA and every other school that has scooped up State of Miami athletes in recent years is currently using about UM's lack of desire to compete at the highest levels.

* It would make ****(head) Fain have to admit that he was wrong. Has nothing to do with the program but it sure will be fun to send him press clipping every time UM wins a football game. (Im sick like that tho. :newman:)

I'm not gonna lie, the talent he racked up at UNC was phenomenal so we know he can load a roster with talent, but the record did not match the talent he had and that's my concern.

We are having a discussion ******. What we say here has no impact on their decision but it's a message board to discuss coaching candidates and if Butch is a potential candidate then we should discuss it.

While true, it is not to worry about. See, down here Butch will recruit SO MUCH BETTER talent that it will win one out of 3 NC all by itself, while finishing second the other two times. When JJ said it is about the Jimmies and the Hoes more than the Xs and Os, Butch was doing most of his recruiting. Once free of JJ, Butch showed what the Jimmies and the Joes could really be at THE U. Butch might not be able to take yours and bet his, like the Bear could, but HIS will bet the living crap out of yours.

This concerns me as well. I love Butch and do feel he's the best realistic option for UM. However, he was never considered the finest of Gameday coaches and even the biggest of Butch fans will admit this.

Despite that, Butch would be licking his chops at another shot to recruit south Florida. You're absolutely right - he had UNC loaded from a talent standpoint.

Combine his ability to identify talent and his reputation in south Florida, and I'd feel we'd be loaded to the point where you wouldn't need the finest tactician.

Another selling point for Davis - the ability to identify and bring in good coaches. Chud, Pagano, Schiano, and Curtis Johnson are all guys that served under Butch at UM and each became head coaches at the College and/or NFL level.

Rustled much?

I know what you mean. But quotes like "I think we need to ask ourselves that question before we continue calling for him", make it sounds like you think we actually have a say in the matter.

I think 2010 at UNC was poised to be pretty equivalent to 2000 here before the **** hit the fan with all the suspensions.
