Worst tackling game of the Cristobal era...

We didn’t play well. It’s how this game goes. You’re going to have flat games. Nobody can explain it, but it happens to everyone. Ole Miss just lost as a 16 point home favorite. Mizzou went to double OT vs Vandy at home. Oregon has looked shaky in several games. You just have to find a way to when when you’re not at your best, and we did.

Miami missed 21 tackles.

Meesh, Alston, Kiko, Porter were the ones who missed 3 or more.

Wesley, OJ, Hill
Tackled solidly best of defense.

It was worst tackling game of Mario
Era, worst since Mid Tenn State.

What was the cause? Short week after playing an uptempo USF offense than ran lots of plays? Injuries piling up? Not focused enough? VT just has horses in Drones and the RB?

I think really it was a little bit of all that. This was uncharacteristic performance from a Guidry defense. It was his units worst tackling game of his Miami tenure.

Why do you all think we tackled so poorly?
I haven’t rewatched yet, couldn’t do it yesterday morning. I think that Drones played more physical than anticipated for one. The larger exposure (from a tackling perspective) in my mind was how poorly we tackled in space when we were forced into flat footed situations by the back.

In one on ones where the offensive player was coming to us, we looked very stiff in the hips, flat footed in my opinion.

I think that perhaps it hasn’t gotten exposed to that degree previously because the one on one tackles that we had been making are when we’ve carried the fight. We are (or had been) AFTER the man with the ball, be it N-S or E-W; V Tech schemed up open space and that allowed the man with ball to dictate the engagement, we were forced to play reactive without the assistance of rallying hats to the ball. And obviously we didn’t look great doing it.

That’s the impression a day of reflection has left me with. Planning to rewatch it later today, maybe there will be some eureka moment.

This has been a nightmare season for you, hasn’t it? Must have been such a disappointment when the ref reversed the TD call. You were ready to go be happy a porster again.

It was just a bad game all around. Defense sucked, o-line struggled, cam had 3 turnovers shít was just pure diarrhea.

Guidry needs to sub the LBs a lil more. Kiko and Wes need a few more breathers to keep them fresh.

Don’t start Richard over OJ no more. The kid had been starting up until this point I don’t get playing Richard over him vs vt.

Porter isn’t playing well at nickel. He needs to kick back outside full time. I saw they made the switch late in the 2nd half and had porter outside with richard at nickel

Powell needs to be at nickel until brown comes back. Or try hill at nickel. Give Patterson more burn at safety because the one thing he could do in hs was tackle

Get Barron a lil more rest
The OL thing is an exaggeration, if the OL was so bad Cam wouldn’t have had 5TDs and 400 yards passing.

Do the defensive gurus on CIS feel our issues are more schematic, personnel, or a combination of the two?

To me tackling in football is like making a layup in basketball. If I as a coach design a play or scheme that gets a player a layup and he misses, that is on the player because I can’t do anything more than put the player in position to make the play.

What i saw Friday night were players who were outflanked on the edge (scheme) and then either too small or too slow to finish the play (personnel). Which is why I made the post about needing Bain because I think he alone would have removed the strong side issues on the edge.

But I ask my first question with all sincerity.

Richard is a garbage tackler in space. Meesh is not a good tackler at all. Harris got bullied by a qb on their td end around. Alston overran the qb twice for big plays. You gotta break down for a mobile qb and force him back to the wash
I agree, the tackeling the other night was basura but I’m sorry dude, Brown was held big time by their qb on that end around. Not his fault the ref didn’t throw the flag.

On the rewatch, Drones is a decent player. He has some of that Cam Ward play making ability in him.
