At the battlefield - I'd walked over to the Native American monument - and there was a Cheyenne there - nice guy. I told him, "Custer came looking for a fight - and he sure found one."

The guy was very surprised, so I explained.

"One of my ancestors rode with Moseby, in the Shenandoah Valley - and pitted against Moseby was George Custer and his cavalry. He was a murderous ba*tard even then. Nice to see he received what he like to deal out."

One can see at the battlefield - Custer really screwed up - tactically.

The question was about the strangest military event one is familiar with.

The Russian 44th Rifle Division participated in the invasion of Finland. They entered this forest.

The Finns didn't kill them - although they were destroyed. But no one knows what killed them, nor how some of them were found. Bizarre poses - frozen with eyes open!

Some standing - like they were frozen in place in milliseconds. Some in their tents - a look of terror - but didn't grab their rifles - and again, eyes open.

There were so many dead - everywhere - but they weren't shot, no obvious physical damage - certainly not just frozen to death by the cold - as some were found sitting around a burned out campfire - clearly after they were dead - just suddenly frozen to death.

When the Finns came into the area - they were shocked - and tried to figure out what had happened here. They examined many bodies - and nothing. Finally told to ignore it - and they were glad to be ordered to move out as many of them felt there was something about this forest - or within the forest that gave them the creeps and the feeling they were being watched.

You won't find a lot of this in Wikipedia - but some can be found in Russian records and the rest can be found in the Finnish military reports.

Russia cleaned up some records as they didn't want this going forward - but they didn't clean up all of it - and the Finns - their reports survived the war.

A whole division. POOF! Killed - but no one killed them.
