Those that think the search committee is a bad thing don't understand how it works. They are basically the Madam at the brothel. They arrange a meeting place, screen the "talent" (in this case, coaches), make sure they meet a standard (resume, winning, experience, etc.), and don't have any diseases (NCAA violations, personal conduct issues, etc.). They help determine their market value for their Johns (Harbaugh $ vs. Folden $), then present them to the John (UM). Now, UM can come in and decide who they want to go to bed with. They don't pick the coach or decide who the U will hire. They also act like the go between so that both Talent and John can "speak" without ever speaking. This matters for Coaches who are currently under contract and a University that doesn't ever want to have to answer the question, "Did you reach out to this girl (coach 1) or that girl (coach 2)?" They can always say that someone else is responsible for making these arrangements.
This is good for the school and good for the coaches IF and only IF the John knows how to pick the right "Talent".
