Winning tomorrow is NOT redemption for 2002

I’ve seen a lot of posts here framing this Ohio State game as some kind of “redemption” opportunity for 2002, and I get it because it’s easy to make that connection, but I don’t really agree with it at all.

Don’t get me wrong, beating Ohio State would be a big win for this program. It just wouldn’t be redemption.

That 2002 title game wasn’t a normal loss. It was a national championship game at the absolute height of our early 2000’s dynasty, with a roster that defined an era of college football. Losing that game didn’t just cost us a title, it marked the end of our era. What followed was 2 decades of instability, drifting identity, coaching churn, and a gradual slide from being THE standard-setter in college football to somewhat of a nostalgia brand (from a national perspective). You can argue about causes all day, but that night clearly closed a chapter.

That’s why it still stings. Not because of Ohio State specifically, and not even just because of the terrible call (**** you Terry Porter). It stings because of everything that came after. Miami stopped being the program everyone chased and became the one constantly trying to get “back.” That’s not something you can undo with a single win, no matter how satisfying it would feel in the moment tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a College Football Playoff quarterfinal, not a national title game. It’s a meaningful stage, but it’s not the same one. Winning tomorrow would continue to validate progress, signal real improvement, and show that the program is trending in the right direction under this staff. But I’d likely feel the same way if we play in a close loss tomorrow.

To me, this game is about progress, not closure. It’s about whether Miami is building something sustainable again, not about settling a 23-year-old emotional score. Trying to frame it as redemption actually undersells what this team is trying to do now, which is carve out its own identity instead of living in the shadow of the early 2000s.

If Miami wins, I’ll enjoy it as much as everyone else.I just won’t call it redemption. That would be beating Ohio State in a title game in an equally heartbreaking way (I can’t really imagine a situation) that sets their program back.

Curious how others see it, because of all the posts talking about how this would be “redemption” for 2002.

I don’t think anyone sees this as making up for that disaster. But it’s a step in the right direction and the best opportunity we’ve had to atone for it since that awful night.

Nothing will ever make up for it.

As far as the team carving their own path, we all know these dudes werent even born then. They couldn’t care less about that game. And if they were to move on, we’ll be on to UGA and 2002 will all be forgotten.

We won a BCS Bowl game the following year. Why do people say that game started the fall? That game didn't start anything.
I say the Peach Bowl vs LSU started every **** thing.

This is just an occurrence of letting the refs beat us and it happened to be the useless nuts of Columbus, Ohio.

We had a two loss season after winning 36 straight. Got blown out @VT.

Had we won the Fiesta, the same downfall likely would’ve occurred … but it would have had a new point of decline. The point of decline as we know it is the Fiesta Bowl.

But the loss to Ohio State was not the REASON for the decline. Ohio State fans actually believe they are the reason for our 20-year swim in mediocrity, something I just learned the past week and find quite amusing. Because, of course they do.

We Miami fans that were around back then all know why we lost the Fiesta Bowl (Coker), why we lost those two games in 2003 (Coker), why we lost THREE games in 2004 (Coker), THREE games in 2005 (Coker), SIX games in 2006 (Coker), and why it was all **** until Mario came (ahem...certain former administration who shall remain unnamed...).

So if you want to get really technical, we could say it was when we hired that certain former admin that is remaining unnamed in Fall 2000. That might be it.

This ^^^

Peach Bowl vs LSU really accelerated our downward trajectory. It was initially a slow decent due to Coker. We could see the effects throughout the 2002 season. Although we were still elite, we didn't have the same focus and played undisciplined and uninspired majority of the season. We escaped some games due to our overwhelming talent.

Our 2003 and 2004 recruiting classes were both in the top 5. The top transfer (Brock Berlin) chose us. We were still a desired program for major recruits. Our head coach got in our way.

Of course, the loss to OSU was brutal, but we were still in the picture for the BCS championship late in the 03',04', and 05' seasons. We stumbled down the stretch in each of those seasons. That OSU didn't affect the program much. It hurt us fans way more than the program.

This is all that needs to be said about it. But a win tomorrow night would be twice as sweet for me than if it was against any other team, ND, F$U, and UF included. That is how deep my hatred against OSU runs for 2002.

Yup. To this day I will not watch highlights from that game and if I come across them accidentally I lunge to turn them off. Too painful.

I made peace with this game long ago.

We were really good and so were they. I think we went in too ****sure, didn't plan all that well, thought we'd put athlete them, and played a poor game overall.

We didn't prep or handle our business in game. Pretty much did everything wrong that we could've and I've always said, don't ever let a game come down to one call, handle your business so that can't happen.

Still don't like them, but I've moved on. Took time, but always F Terry Porter.

Disagree with this. What you described is what happened in 1992, and I was at that game and a band member. Team did not take that game seriously and it’s pretty well known a lot of players were tore up from the night before. 2002 was more about Ohio State having the only D line in the country that could give us problems, McGahee getting hurt (we were starting to gash them), and a bunch of weird stuff even before Porter. ST26 getting stripped, Parrish one block away from busting that last punt return, and not using Winslow enough (OSU had no answer for him).

Meh.

Hiring Coker started the downfall of the program. Don’t give OSU the credit. We did it to ourselves, again and again and again.

That loss at the Fiesta bowl was when I was in undergrad at the U. My friend still doesn’t eat Tostitos to this day.

It is totally about payback. That’s why I’m here in Dallas. I want my pound of flesh.
