How can we expect a national championship when we've never even won the division of the ACC yet alone the conference?
Might be in the minority here but actually have no issue with the Coastal goal. It is something that is obtainable and sadly would be considered an accomplishment in our 11 year tenure in ACC. However, it is realistic and you want your team buying into something that is realistic. Should it be the standard? No, as we aren't Wake Forest of UVA but let's not take the boom or bust approach when the boom is uncharted territory for this program. Build off of the Coastal into winning the ACC then competing for National Titles. All of this is on the macro level and sadly in year 5 should not be focusing on the Coastal. However, based on where we are with the roster we have, the goal is reasonable.
Weak. Really weak.
The Coastal should NEVER be the goal at UM. EVER. You can set the ACC Championship as a goal because that could lead to a NC. Setting the Coastal as a goal is a pathetic cop out.
As a Canes fan I couldn't agree with you more. However, I am taking my fan glasses off here and putting myself in the AD's shoes. I didn't express in previous post well enough that the winning the Coastal outright is the minimum goal. With that being said, losses to Cincy, losing a 5th consecutive game to FSU and looking sloppy at times is not acceptable by any means. The reality of the situation is that we just aren't in a place realistically to compete for National Championships and as any good manager have to be aware of what you are working with to set obtainable goals. The fact is we haven't won the division in 11 years so frankly have put ourselves in a position where winning the Coastal is actually viewed as success but should not be satisfied with it.
Golden has made the Coastal the end goal which is weak, really weak as you put it best. Being in year 5 with all of his guys the goal of Coastal is too low. My point was solely from a management perspective I see the value in stressing the Coastal as it is an obtainable goal. However, would make it crystal clear to the coach that it is the minimum standard in year 5 and moving forward.
