Why were we throwing the homerun ball

I’ll replay it back in my head 1000 times going forward, which is about 11 billion fewer than Beck will.

Hate it for him. He played really well for 99% of the season, and it was set up for an all-time moment. Under 2 mins left, down 6, you’ve got the ball and you’re on your home field. We had 52 seconds, and we were chewing them up in the short and intermediate game. Almost a mirror image of Louisville. It was first down, you just don’t need to take that shot. Marion also isn’t even looking for the ball. It’s badly under thrown and if your WR isn’t looking to be able to come back to it, game over. Would’ve loved to have just kept chipping away, we’re in plus territory with plenty of time.

Really hurts, man. I can’t imagine how he feels right now. Just got a little too greedy when you don’t have to. But **** what a special moment that could’ve been for him and the team and all of us. The **** you dream as a kid. ****.
This.

Yup. He really can’t drive the football down the field. That ball, if you’re gonna throw it, has to be a rope way more vertical and to the outside. I don’t think it was a horrible decision. We didn’t need it, but it’s not like it was total blanket coverage. Marion is in the hole. He just doesn’t have that throw in his bag and I don’t understand why you try it knowing that and more importantly not needing it. It’s first down. ****, even if you do hit it you give them a ton of time to come back and score. 52 seconds, that’s a ball you throw it there’s 22 seconds.

Just hate that it ends like that for him. All the haters are piling on, of course, because it’s another pick for him in a big spot. But I’d have loved to have seen it play out if he just continues to do what was working the whole half.
That's the type of throw NFL scouts are going to replay over and over. He just doesn't have an NFL arm.

I watched like a replay of it and it seemed like Toney was running across the middle at the **** near 25 yard line for an easy grab

Marion must have been just the coverage buster to keep the safety back

Beck has to air that ball out to the pylon… gunning it let that corner come back and grab it
MArion ran that route like his route was dead and wasnt even looking for ball.. WTF man

The only thing I can think of is it was an option route for Marion. My best guess is Beck saw a window in between the safety and the corner right near the sideline and so he threw it in there thinking Marion saw the same thing and was going to break off his deep route and sit in the zone. Obviously Marion continued running the route probably not even thinking Beck was going to throw to him, hence he didn't turn his head till late.

Otherwise, he just severely under threw a go route. Either way, it was disappointing for Beck, he deserved better.

There is no way that was what was called.
I refuse to believe any OC could be that dumb, even in highschool or your local gym teacher would know better.
Let’s imagine he was NOT DOUBLE covered, and that terribly under thrown ball hits its mark and we score. We then leave Indiana with 50 seconds, and a timeout to win the game with a FIELD GOAL with one of the best kickers in the country. We would have probably lost anyway. 50 seconds a time out to get 35 to 40 yards and then field goal I’d highly probable.
That was all on Beck, and I’d be willing to bet my house on it. Beck in his infinite wisdom decides he want to play hero and throws into double coverage. Beck has always been unclutch. That’s his biggest problem, not his ability or play, but as a coach you just know he’ll find a way to **** it up. Becks ego and stupidity lost them the game.
It makes absolutely no sense to play for a hail mary ball with that much time left.. Marion looked like he was running a dead route

Yeah he had 2 or 3 steps on his corner with the safety coming late… throw it to the pylon

I wouldn’t doubt if it was just a decoy route to keep the safety away from the middle to rob any crossing route

What’s Beck trying to say it was a 30+ yard curl route???? A go route is a **** go

Marion ran that route like it was a decoy or homerun to the endzone (based on when he looked for the ball)...If it was a deep curl or back shoulder then something was lost in the communication....Just a hard way to go out....

Idk why a deep curl or back shoulder would have been a play. Corner is behind him and the safety is coming in late and in line

The only play is airing it over or out of bounds and take the L on the play and live for the next down

Throwing it short essentially put both defenders into the play

Toney was wide open for just enough to get a first. Beck was going Marion the whole way.
Yup. The ball was snapped with :51 seconds left. You honestly don't want to score a TD there as it leaves IU with way to much time and all they need is a FG. Throw the in cut to Toney and we've got 1st and 10 at the 30 and the clock stops at about :44 seconds for the 1st down. You take the last 30 yards in two bites scoring with :15? Maybe :10 left. That's the ideal outcome but lots of times QB's and OC's get nervous when the clock gets under 1 minute and they force things.

Might have been concussed. He hasn’t made that mistake in the playoffs so far. I just don’t think he processed what he was seeing.

And you are 💯 correct.
There is No way. I’d be willing to bet everything I own that was not the call, plan, discussion, thought, idea in any way shape or form to make that throw.
As an amateur HS coach myself, that coaches HS team and several 7-7 teams. I’ve been in this situation 20 to 40 times before. You play not only the defense but the clock as well.
If it’s a run that breaks free you take it, but you would never
I really hope so… that deep ball hasn’t been his game all season.

Why play hero ball when your on their side with 50 seconds to go on 1st down… it wasn’t the **** time
It was completely idiotic and gave the game away.
I still can’t believe how we lost.
Not that we lost, but how it happened.
I’m sorry, I don’t like to put down players but he’s a professional at this point getting payed 4 million a year. Beck is a ******. He let his team down, destroyed the season and lost the Natty due to his ego and unbelievably terrible decision and worse throw. You never, ever want the game in the hands of someone like Beck. They will **** it up.

Wanted us to go to Toney in the middle of the field and let him work. Have to put the ball in your best player’s hands in that situation and there was plenty of time so we didn’t need to go for it all there.

That said, he might have been able to hit that with better ball placement. I would have been stressed at leaving Indiana with 45 seconds needing only a field goal — but I would have taken it.

That throw made 0 sense you don't throw that ball in cover 2 if you don't have a receiver or tightend occupying the space below to hold the corner lower on the route he was the only **** guy in that side with a corner and safety over top that was a huge no go and he just went for it. Sucks for someome who was doing so well taking what they were giving him. There was no rush to throw and will haunt us and him for a very long time

If they win on a FG because the defense gives up big plays with 40 seconds to go, I can live with that.
