Why does Miami hate ND?

I just watched the intro to the '85 game. One of Musberger's opening lines was "In the Orange Bowl this afternoon there will be some 50,000 on hand..." and you could see lots of empty seats close to the end zone. He didn't say it as any kind of putdown, it was just a normal fact and nobody anywhere really cared about it.

To put that in perspective, Miami was 9-1 and ranked #4 that day, still hoping to play for a national title and had just won one 2 years earlier. There's just a very different narrative about cfb attendance in recent years. I'm guessing there will be more at this year's game than that one.

Most of the reasons for hate have already been covered, but I'd add that Lou Holtz was an incredibly self-righteous jerk that media portrayed like a saint, and in general people were sick of the media favoritism toward ND. And of course during the '86-'94 era TV talking heads and conservative traditionalist types could hardly contain their anger that UM was a dominant program. That wasn't always related to ND, but fans remembered them as the origin and symbol of it all - the smears, the lies and the cheating that would be directed toward us for years.

Well.

When Miami was establishing themselves as a tgood actual football team. And say what you want about Convicts vs Catholics.

From what I know about history back in the day is that when Miami went to Notre Dame.

They literally rocked our vans. Call my brothers Nigg I ain't finishing the rest of that.

Spit at us. And told us get the f*** out of here.

Besides the close games and the crazy touchdowns, but the bottom line is what I just said above

As a Gen x white dude. I stand next to all races. Especially Brothers. And come this first game this season we will put our foot up their f****** asses again.

Maybe I'm wrong and y'all the shoolls will correct me.
There is literally an entire 40 for 40 explaining the history of the rivalry.

A bunch of racist crybabies from top to bottom. ND was THE establishment that the Canes of old tore to the ground. They have unlimited resources, an exclusive network contract, their whole catholic-school pipeline, and wild favoritism among sports journalists. Their holier-than-thou elitism is nauseating. When they lose, its because they were intimidated in the tunnel. or a fan threw a bottle at their bus, or their opponents are too dumb to get through ND admissions, or best of all, their opponents are "convicts" (code for not white). ND ended the series, allegedly because it was getting too hot. Reality is playing the Canes destroyed their entire season too many times.

While UM/ND was a rivalry, it wasn't hostile until the Nov 30, 1985 game.

ND had hired a HS coach Gerry Faust and this was his last game after five years that went from mediocre to bad. Everyone knew Faust would be fired after this last game, but ND and college football decided he was a "good man" and should go out with class.

The color announcer was Ara Parsehgian who had been ND's (successful) head coach prior to Faust. Parsehgian was a ND man through and through. He decided after a certain UM lead that was enough and UM should just quietly run out the game so as not embarrass "good man" Gerry Faust. And Parsehgian viewed ND as an institutional icon. He thought ND was the center of the universe and should always be viewed with reverence.

Jimmy Johnson didn't agree and ran up the score 58-7 :ROFLMAO: Parseghian went ballistic, which was hysterical to us. And all the proper people in college football criticized JJ and UM. It ****ed all of them off more when JJ went on TV and said he didn't care lol

That's when the hatred started

Thank you for teaching the kids.

Meanwhile, that exact same year Notre Dame beat ARMY, who deserves a **** of a lot more respect than Notre Dame, 42-0. Where was the outrage for that lopsided embarrassment of a school that certainly doesn’t deserve it???

Also, when Parseghian coached Notre Dame they beat Army 52-10 in 1970 and 62-3 in 1973. Yep, pure class.

They had been beating up on teams for years and couldn’t take it when their beloved team finally got bullied back. Hypocrites at best, racists at worst.

Miami was always looked at as the HBCU of major cfb, that’s how I see it at least, and that’s how we were treated. But the ND hate comes from them thinking they’re the goodie 2 shoes of cfb. They were calling us convicts, but they’re weren’t any better character wise. I was born in 1986 so my dislike for ND is not as deep as some of the old school fans, like if you talk to my dad he doesn’t care for ND at all.

With due respect to your excellent summation of the rivalry, I think the hostilities commenced in the 1983 game where several ND players complained about the UM players trash-talking before, during and after game. Schnellenberger and his staff had molded a very young 1983 team into a bunch of hard-****d gritty players led by several upperclassmen who were not highly recruited. People forget that many of these seniors were Class of '80 HS signers who often took back seat to many of the local '80 talent that left the area, so they played with a chip on their shoulders. Anyways, we out-toughed ND in '83 and then at their place in '84. The latter in South Bend was a very chippy game. I recall Highsmith "saluting" their student body after he scored a TD. So all of this to say this set the stage for the '85 game where one team maintained the passion for that rivalry and the other showed up disinterested. Anyways, just adding my .02 to Paly's excellent post.

Great add'l perspective. Thanks

ND fans are annoying. Being Catholic, met many. They talk about the school like it is Harvard. Many of them send kids and grandkids there like it is a cult. A holy roller cult. They need a good beatdown. Toxic place.

As annoying as the ND fans can be, nothing was as bad as the State Penn crew during the JoePa era. Believe me, they were an insufferable, and often bigoted, crew. They have tempered their arrogance somewhat after the Jerry Sandusky scandal. It's as if they know opposing fans have the Sandusky thingie lock and loaded if they talk nonsense about other programs.

i always found Ara's criticism of Miami very "rich, considering that when Ara's settled for a tie against Michigan state in 1966 & then went to LA and ran it up versus USC 51-0 ..... talk about the pot calling the kettle black

Amen, PSU fans are more arrogant than ND fans day in day out. I knew a guy who was on Ga.Tech athletic board who commented multiple times how "dirty" football program was under Jo Pa.

Why?

Its been documented above

Its the same reason why Jimmy loved, loved, beating ND, Oklahoma and Nebraska

All the big tradition schools, seen as the way to do it, white players, and they all hated Miami, and had the media paint Miami as the villain for racist reasons so when Jimmy beat the **** out of all of them, Miami was seen as being the villain
