i knew kids that i went to UM with that didnt know UM was a small private school until they legit showed up to move in. bc of the athletic success, out of staters assume its a large public school.
I wasn't that far behind, though I didn't even know the school existed until I was dragged along to see the campus when a "family" member was going to attend. Once I began to do some UM research and saw the requirements for my program and the tuition, I began looking for other options lol. Ended up only applying to UM.
I got admitted to UM but with no scholarship (huge slacker in high school) and having 2 teachers for parents there was no way I could afford it. So I went the MDCC/FIU route. But nearly all my friends and my gf were at UM so I spent a lot more time on that campus than my own.
Yeah, count me among the 60? 75? 90? percent of Canes fans who didn't have the funds or academic credentials (in my case both) to attend Miami. Wouldn't have cut it at FAMU or Bethune, either.
Spent a lot of time in Daytona over the years so just ended up gravitating toward the Cats in that rivalry. Plus, BCC was usually the underdog.

I stayed on Jackson Bluff, right across the street from the Village. Used to run the stairs at night in the Doak. Used to hoop at Leach, Tully, TCC, FAM, but the best spot was probably behind Smith Hall on fsu campus.
