Why do we refuse to play with any kind of tempo?

Our offense played well yesterday, against a terrible defense. That said we only scored 34 points and had drives stall out. We insist on snapping the ball with a couple seconds left on the play clock and yesterday doing so cost us a TD (the illegal shift penalty). After every play they just walk back to the huddle with no sense of urgency. With our talent advantage in the ACC why wouldn’t you want to put pressure on a defense and just keep hammering them with no let up.

I appreciate Dawson calling some different stuff but he also throws plays away. We had a 1st and 20 and he reset to run a A gap dive with Pringle which went for 2-3 yards. Thankfully he got bailed out on 2nd down when Beck bought time, scrambled left and hit Marion on the sideline for a nice first down. Against a competent defense are we converting that? The numbers tell us we aren’t.

Good win yesterday but we still have issues on offense IMO. And those issues continue to be personnel and tempo.

You’re right.

I just don’t get why we don’t score on every single drive.

Dude we could have picked a score yesterday.

Take a week off.
56-0 or 63-0 would have looked a whole lot better than 41-7 to the committee. But that’s just me. Need to make it 100% clear to the CFP and put up PlayStation numbers that they won’t leave us out. Instead final score isn’t much different than what ND did to them.

They do more than just look at the score. 575-150 yardage differential and a team that didnt cross the 50 until scrub time in the fourth after 1000 yards and 50 plus points in the previous two weeks?

Defense played great as they have for 98% of the season. I’m talking about offense. NC State has a terrible defense. We put up yards but only scored 4 TDs. Lack of tempo cost us a TD (illegal shift penalty). I’m still not sold on our offense. Sad part is the talent is there.

Don’t have to score on every drive if your playing with a little more tempo and getting 2-4 more drives a game.

Using yesterday’s game and saying we “only” scored 34 points is a really bad example to make your point.

Just a quick glance at yesterday’s statistic shows that we had 11 drives with six of them being scoring drives - that’s 55% of our drives ending up with a score. On average in college football, It’s usually about 37 to 38%.

Pick another game to make your point.

We scored 2 TDS on 6 1st half possessions and 2 on 4 2nd half possessions. Against this defense

Six scoring drives out of 11, one of those being a kneel down, so if you’re going to cherry pick then so will I, it’s six out of 10 for 60%. College football average is 37%.

You’re flailing, hoss. Of all the games you had to choose from, you pick the worst possible one.

FGs against a top 10 worst defense in all of college football? Surprised you didn’t mention we missed a field goal so that would have been another successful drive. And I took the kneel down off the board. If you count that we had 11 drives. 4 TDs on 11 drives against that defense.

Go ahead and die on this hill. I’ll write your obituary.

OP posts about tempo.

Everybody fights back with argument that we scored.

That wasnt OPs point? Its NC State, one of the worst defenses in football. Of course we scored, but that doesnt answer his question of whether it was a fast or slow pace.

I saw the last second Jojo procedure penalty, I saw us burn a TO to avoid another delay of game. Seems like we have at least one of those a game.

I dont need to ask this question because I know why we play with a slow pace, I know Mario's style.

But I am bothered that nothing can be questioned after beating a bad team. And the responses dont answer the actual question. Tempo is the question, not points or effectiveness.

Faster tempo should = more possessions, which should = more points. Trusting the D to hold it down for the extra possessions caused by tempo, and our offense to capitalize with more opportunities seems sound to me. As OP stated.

Two losses the O scored in the 20's - not good enough. The sum ain't equaling the parts. While in totality the offensive performance was great yesterday, the first half was not. What was the average yards per carry in the 1st half? To my recollection, which could be wrong, the pulling action/outside runs began once the game was well in hand. It's like we're terrified of getting behind the sticks when it matters.

Again, while I tip my hat to the overall performance of the offense, NC St. is abysmal defensively, exacerbated by an offense that was COMPLETELY shut down. You think being on the field all day didn't affect an already bad defense, especially in the 2nd half?

Great day. But make no mistake, this is not a great offense.
