WHY DO WE EVEN BOTHER?

Richt went 9-4 with a 5 game winning streak to end and a good bowl win. Could have beaten FSU, UNC, and ND too so who knows how good that year could have been!

Ohio State went 6-7 under Luke Fickell in 2011. 2012 Ohio State went 12-0 and finished #3 under Urban Meyer. Probably would have won national championship but were banned by NCAA.

Here's a full list of best college coaches with 10 win or greater first seasons.

i wouldnt put urban in a cat as a first year hc since hes expereinced. id say look at riley, day, smart, etc.

You mean first time head coaches? As in coordinators turned head coach? That's an absurd line to draw.

Top programs generally turn to 1st time head coaches to get over the hump when a program seems to have hit a ceiling. Riley took over a 10 win team. Day took over a 12 win team. Coker took over a 11 win team. Smart took over a 10 win team.

Dabo took over a 8 win team, but Clemson hadn't been relevant in almost a decade so there wasn't much to lose.

Can you guess why most top programs don't turn to 1st time head coaches to fix broken programs? Because its f#cking retarded to ask someone who has never picked a staff or run a practice to engineer a quick turnaround. If you pick a Manny type first time coordinator, you do it after the 10 win 2017 season, when there is recruiting momentum and he can build on a good foundation. You DON'T turn a 1st time coordinator after a 7-6 season when the wheels are falling off.

Unless he is an elite recruiter like Dabo (and it was well known Manny isnt a good recruiter) you are asking an inexperienced coach who can't recruit to restock with top talent. He also doesn't know how to pick a staff that can help with recruiting. So no momentum leads to bad seasons, recruits bailing and player transfers, less momentum, and eventual firing. It is doomed to fail from the start. You don't see it a lot because most ADs are smart enough to realize that.
