Why did Damien Martinez drop in the draft?

I'm a huge Damien Martinez fan. IMO in the "Best RB since Duke Johnson" debate, Martinez is the answer.

I'm still confused as to why he dropped so far in the draft - and my best guess is weight issues.

Who knows if this really affected his draft position. But if I were a scout, and a RB was fluctuating 20-25 lbs. (241 - 217) I'd want some answers as to why.

I hadn't seen his weight discussed much, and I had been posting there was weird stuff going on, so here it is.

241/232
241 is what he was reported to weigh at Oregon St. 232 is what he was listed at on Oregon St.'s roster.

238/230
238 is what he was reported to weigh when he came to Miami. 230 is what he was listed at on Miami's roster.

The announcer during the Iowa St bowl game said this (which has been overlooked - I think because they said it right after his 75 yd run):

"Aaron Feld strength coach for Miami said when he showed up he was like a potato. That's what he called him. Said he dropped about 12 pounds the first quarter of the season, got a little bit lighter, and that speed has shown up specifically in the last half of the season."

"That's a great point because Mark Fletcher was the guy that has some of that burst in the run game. Damien was slow getting going, but knocking off those pounds he looked like a different guy"

241/226
241 was his "verified" weight coming into the Senior Bowl. 226 was his weight at the Senior Bowl.

This is where it gets weird because (see tweet below) Martinez claimed he always played at 226. Which doesn't seem true. I think his team tried to control the narrative on his weight and it backfired.

217
217 was his weight at the NFL Combine. I still don't understand why he shed so much weight. If it was to run a faster 40, great, but his 40 time at 217 is kind of irrelevant if he plays at 230. If he told teams that was more his normal eight or what he plans at playing at, then his film as a 230 thumper is now kind of irrelevant.

The draft is about projecting, he is what he is already there isn’t another level to his game. High floor/low ceiling players at a position that is kinda just getting its value back

But he landed in a great spot for him imo, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s in their rotation

NFL GMs didnt think as highly of him as Miami fans did, myself included. Its just another reality check to how we overrate our guys. Everyone but Cam and Arroyo was basically not looked at as fondly by the league.
Exactly. I still get flack til this day when i tell people that the best RB on the roster was a freshman last year. And that we also need another RB bc Mark Fletcher shouldn't be #2.

I don't think he would have greatly benefited by coming back, but we would have... he was a step above the rest of the room

The truth is HT/WT numbers never should be taken serious. You are putting way too much thought into info that in most cases is fabricated.

I bumped into him around the time when he got here. He didn't look the part. Wasn't necessarily an impressive looking dude. He looked like he was carrying a little weight in the midsection. However, as I watched him play throughout the season, I think that lower center of gravity probably helped him on the field. But the lack of speed (not sure what his 40 time) probably hurt him a bit, but I think the kid can absolutely play. He's physical and runs violent.

Sorry for the mini-rant, this isn't projected at you...but I just don't understand why our fans never trust our roster HT/WT

90% of the time the HT/WT on our roster is very close to what they measure at the NFL combine (I know, I've checked it)

Like - if Martinez was 232 on the roster at OSU, and 230 on Miami's roster - did both schools randomly come up with the same number?

If the Coach Felder says Martinez was overweight and lost 12 lbs - why wouldn't we believe him? Why would he make that up? Usually if a coach is using "coach speak", he's giving a more positive spin on things, not negative.

I don't get it.

He showed up for his audition out of shape. It took him months to have any spark. You think the NFL wanted to see that happen again on a guy with no 'stand out' traits?

Not going to pretend to know what Martinez’s weight was during the season and whether or not he lost/gained weight but I totally get getting as light as possible for the combine.

There’s literally no combine drill to show a power back’s skill. Your best bet is to try to get as light as possible to run the fastest possible 40, and highest possible vertical leap. Then put the 10 pounds or so back on when actual football starts happening again.

He actually ran a good 40.

What did him in is he isnt known as a pass catcher.

That 4th rd grouping is a list of whos who of guys hes better than. But he is a bell cow back, and scheme fit wise guys may have looked for pass catchers out the backfield or just guys they liked. See la rams drafting a kid because the gm went to auburn.

I personally think he ahould of went between 4th an 5th i thibk only one rb maybe went in the third

The position is devalued and this years rb crop was deep.

The dolphins got ollie gordon in the 6th.bin mid 2000s he doesnt make it out the third rd
