Why are we so down on Banda and Patke's pedigree...

Agreed.

It doesn’t look great but to summarily dismiss it as an awful hire before these guys are even given a chance is dumb.

We’ll know soon enough.

Theres simply no debating that the process here was not that of a high end P5 program looking to compete for championships. This hire reeks of either laziness, poverty, desperation, or some combination of the three. The future trajectories of these guys careers is basically irrelevant here. They are quite simply not qualified to hold their current (new) positions at a program of UM’s stature. Hopefully it works out, but in this case, even a positive outcome won’t mean that this search process was handled properly.

I mean if we have a Top 10 defense next year how could you possibly say the search process wasn’t handled properly?

Isn’t the objective of the search to get the best candidates?

When you hire someone who isn’t qualified for the position, you have not gotten the best candidate.

Hiring Brent Venables or Dave Aranda (just to throw some top of the line names in there, realizing those particular names weren’t realistic options) or any of many other experienced and proven current DC’s, would have been an appropriate process.

If this thing works out, you were lucky, not good. I hope these guys work out great, but this 24 hour “national search” is nothing other than total bush league.

How can you call them unqualified?

Banda has years of experience as a position coach. Patke has been with Diaz for the longest time. Simpson was an elite HS coach and coached in the NFL.

Every DC has had to cut their teeth.

You don’t just become a DC.

They are unqualified to be DC at Miami. You know this as well as I do.

Yup. Anywhere is a broad term.

Sleep well, friend. I take it Kenneth is not sleeping over tonight?

I feel like I could really use a good prostate massage after the rear ending Dicht has provided us all with this week.

If you looked at the Corey Raymond thread, you would see that my Kennykins had a very rough day thanks to some mean spirited posters on here - https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/corey-raymond.141807/page-5#post-3680645

He is sleeping over.

I lent him Stewart for the night.

Agreed.

The ‘national search’ was a farce. I doubt Richt has much of a Rolodex outside of DCs he knows in the SEC. A name or rising star might not accept the job if Richt is the lame duck some on CIS think and hope he is. Richt may have also insisted on retaining as much of the defensive staff as he could. Another reason a outside DC might balk at the opportunity.

Someone might accept for the money, if the Canes were paying top-dollar. And that might not be the DC we’d want.

Penny, you are recently detached from this fiasco...thoughts on the hires/promotions today?
I don’t have an issue with it. Both guys have been around Diaz’ system for quite some time and I’m confident they’ll be able to take over. I like the fact there’s an extra coaching spot, if it’s put to good use.

“Sources close to the program” in other words Mark Richt said Patke is the brains of the UM defense. When coaches outside of the program were asked their thoughts on the Patke hire, they all responded “WHO????”

Truth is nobody including RIcht knows for sure. We don't know what these cats did behind the scenes so how can we be certain they won't succeed in their new roles?

How well received would Sean McVay or Lincoln Riley been if we announced one as HC 5 years ago? Probably not well around here.

All I can say is this is Richt pushing more/all his chips to the center of the table. No excuses if they don't work out.

Diaz was an experienced DC at multiple places before coming here. Banda has no experiencing calling plays and Patke was a quality control guy a year ago.
This does concern me. Banda may have been with Manny for 6 seasons but Manny was calling plays at some top notch programs.
