Seems stupid as fvck to basically put a sheet of ice next to the playing surface.

But hey, I'm sure there are people out there getting paid millions of dollars to keep an eye on this type of crap.

Because pure ice would melt this early in the year at most stadiums? Yeah, wondered the same myself. It's not like artificial turf exists yet and could be used on the sideline if grass wear is the real concern.
