Why are FSU fans thrilled about Taggart?

He's a good coach. FSU is gonna score a lot of points. He couldn't win once Herbert went down at Oregon though.

They seemed to do just fine against Cal (45), Utah (41), Arizona (48), and Oregon State (69). The problem wasn't so much their QB. It was the inevitable result of a gimmick offense meeting a non-****stick defense.

Leavitt is getting WAY too much love on this board.

exactly.

we also already tried the black kids will want to play for the black coach thing 10 years ago and it didnt work wit radio. most of these kids arent making adecision based on race of the coach.

I know logic and sense isn't allowed here, but let's give credit where credit is due. This isn't a horrible hire by any stretch of the imagination. WT's record looks awful because he's taken over at some awful places, and BUILT winners. WKU when he took over was transitioning to FBS, and he took them to bowl eligibility by year three, he built it to where someone like Petrino could come in and do his penance and get some easy wins. He inherited a grease fire from Skip Holtz at USF, and by the time he left, had USF as one of the better midmajor programs in the nation.

That said, Miami shouldn't fear WT or any coach. For the first time in 15 years, Miami has a legit HC, fundraising is where it should be and the infrastructure is coming along. This program has legit momentum, and there's nothing WT, Mullen or anyone else can do about it.

Kevin Sumlin to TAMU type of hire..

Maybe...if even that good. Might end up about the same way. Sumlin had early success at aTm, but then faded. I can't see Taggart having that kind of success next season at FSU.

It’s a penny pinching hire...we know how that turns out. This isn’t the pack 12 it’s the ACC. Personally I think FSU is bigger rebuild that ppl realize and that is also something that caused Jimbo to run. Cuz he loaded up his roster with bust.

No, it's a "We aren't going to throw money around just because" kind of hire. I'm willing to bet that FSU reached out to guys like Fuente and others, who made it clear they weren't interested. WT isn't a guy you play 5 million to right now, and FSU was right to make sure they didn't overpay. They paid what the market indicates WT should get. In other words, they didn' t

I don't know why Jimbo left, but I'm willing to bet that it was because A)TAMU backed up the truck for him, and he doesn't have any loyalty to FSU , and B) There were a lot of personal things going around, and he probably felt like he needed to make a fresh start. Who cares? FSU could hire the ghost of Vince Lombardi and I wouldn't worry, because Miami has a legit coach and a relatively strong staff.

Not even close to as good.

Sumlin was a well respected offensive mind who had major college coordinator experience. He had also done a wayyy better job at Houston than Taggart did at any of his jobs. Granted, Sumlin followed Art Briles, but Sumlin made them way better than they ever were under Briles.

Hiring Taggart is based on faith, not results. Absolutely nothing the guy has done leads to the conclusion that he is a big time coach. Very comparable to Al Golden, except Golden had more experience coaching at the major college level than Taggart does.

I definitely feel his wife stepping out on him/divorce had a huge impact on his decision.

Add $75 million guaranteed and you're outta there.

He will recruit great and he’s no stranger to recruiting shenanigans so his bag game at FSU will be strong, no doubt. He will be fielding top 5 classes in no time and as we know, you field top 5 classes and have a competent qb, that’s guaranteed top 10 every year, pretty much.

He's not the guru that Fisher was. Flowers looks like he same kid he was in HS.

South Florida was not an awful place. Neither was Western Kentucky which is one of the best mid-major programs in America.

The two guys who came immediately after him at Western Kentucky are both better coaches than he is. Jeff Brohm took over a Purdue program that was 9-39 under the previous head coach. He went 6-6 in his first year in the Big Ten. So he took a 3-9 team in the Big Ten and had a non-losing season in his first year.

Taggart went 2-10 in his first year at both Western Kentucky and South Florida.

I know Richt is laughing his *** off....

I hope not as that's a recipe for disaster. He should and will work just as hard as he would for anyone. Give an inch, they will take a mile.

Fortunately for us, Richt is a very good man. You can bet though that a successful (whether you believe he will be successful or not at FDU) younger black male as the head coach at a prominent football institution will resonate with some families on those in home visits. Of course you have to back that up with wins, but for those who grew up in broken homes, it will matter to some.

FSU should always do well in the recruiting trail. They have the pedigree, great recruiting pool to draw from, are a large state school, and as many longtime posters have said FAMU nearby.

I am not particularly worried in the sense that they got some great coach. He brings some things that I feel could be successful down the road. I feel we're in a good position, but by no means can Richt and company afford to rest on their laurels. They seemed to do that enough in their game prep for the first half of games this year and against talented teams that won't work.

He averages about a 6-6 record every year with mid tier programs. He is a decent recruiter but that does not mean much. This is a huge downgrade from Jimbo. Taggart is like a Charlie strong it Randy Shannon type hire.

Who's available that's better?

And at this point it should go without saying that sometimes coaches do better at one school than they did at another.

Jimmy Johnson only became a great, legendary coach once he got to Miami. Don't underestimate the effect of a better program on his performance as a coach.

When I was a Georgetown student and basketball fan in the early '80's I thought top black basketball recruits would all want to come play for John Thompson Sr. I found that wasn't true at all.

Most recruits don't care.
