Who we coulda/woulda/shoulda hired

These lists dont account for hires that didn’t happen

2007 Gary Patterson should have been the move.... JJ himself vouched and pushed

Problem with this list is what about all the other coaches that just weren’t hired as head coaches the same year. What about the guys that were coordinators that didn’t get hired till a year later like Lincoln Riley or head coaches we coulda poached that didn’t get lured away till a different year. There were good coaches available those years even if they aren't on the hired as a head coach the same year list.

Again, how did we miss on Saban, in 07, when he was literally in our back yard? How in tf did we hire Shannon over Saban?

Not sure if it’s urban legend or fact, but the story goes that Alabama was able to get Saban because his wife didn’t like living in South Florida. Coaching at Miami wouldn’t have changed that, so it’s unlikely Miami would have had a shot.

Lansing, MI, Baton Rouge, LA, and Tuscaloosa, AL all offer a life-style Miami can’t match.

Leach should have been the hire in 2007.

He wanted the job. Wouldn’t have been expensive. Staff hires wouldn’t have been expensive. And Shannon could have stayed as DC and Assistant HC.
It was too perfect, and so easy to see. Yet, we screwed it up!

If that’s true; then Miami should’ve gave her, her own separate contact, worth $500k/yr. lol.

This list is accounting for Coaches that simply weren't fired or hired elsewhere during those times, doesn't mean they weren't available.

In 2007, LSU beat Ohio St for BCS national championship, coaches like Jumbo Fisher was an OC for Les Miles then got hired at FSU at the same position.

Gary Patterson was in his 7th year at TCU & had four 10/11 win seasons at that point & was a coach heavily endorsed by Jimmy Johnson.

Gus Malzahn was in his first year as Co OC/QB coach for Todd Graham who had won back to back 10 win seasons at Tulsa. Art Briles was in his 5th year at Houston coming off a 10 win season in 06 right before he got hired at Baylor.

Both Kevin Wilson & Brent Venables were at Oklahoma under Bob Stoops, Wilson was in his 6th year there as OC & Venables had been there for 9 years as a LB's coach/DC. Kevin Sumlin was Okla's Co-OC & WR's coach before he got hired at Houston.

Leach had reached his peak at TTech & had Dana Holgorsen as his OC. BYU had Bronco Mendenhall in his 3rd year as a HC. Ohio State had Luke Fickell as their Co-DC.

UF had Urban Meyer, Dan Mullen & Charlie Strong. Oregon has Chip Kelly as their OC under Mike Bellotti when Chip was heralded as one the best young up incoming innovative X's & O's gurus coming from that New Hampshire system.

UCLA had Dino Babers as a RB's coach & had been WR's coach as well under that Karl Dorrell/Jay Norvell regime.

Boise St was in year 2 of the Chris Petersen era coming off of going undefeated & beating Oklahoma in one the biggest upsets of the BCS era at that infamous Fiesta Bowl. They had Bryan Harsin (current BSU HC) as their OC & a young Justic Wilcox (current Cal HC) as their DC.

2011 I won't even get into because that was the Shapiro scandal years, but as far as Coaches we missed out on in the past especially in 07, the list is very long.

You have to also keep in mind this was back in 07, Miami was still considered a marquee program that had the remnants of the 00/01/02 years still attached to the brand of the program. We could've offered dozens of coaches the HC job back then & they woulda jumped at the opportunity. It would only be after the Shannon/Folden eras where Miami was looked at as a sh*t job, but before Shannon we were one of the top 5 jobs in college football.

If we had an adminstration that knew it was doing & could pick coaches worth a ****, there was a ton of young upcoming guys we could've brought in that would've kept us afloat during those dark years.
