For 2007, here are the Division I football coach hirings. Obviously, this does not include anyone we "could have hired" but who did not, in fact, change jobs:

Some interesting names. We weren't going to hire Saban away from the Dolphins. We clearly were not interested in bringing back Butch or Drunken Dennis. We could argue that Mario was unproven, but we DID hire Randy. Dantonio and Harbaugh succeeded. Who else should we have pursued?

So, outside of a bumper crop of successful coaches in 2016, I would like to know who we should have hired in 2007 and 2011 (besides Butch, obviously, and that's no sarcasm, I love Butch).

Keep in mind, I am still angry at the lack of effort by our various ADs and BoTs, I'm just pointing out that we didn't "miss out" on as many coaches as some may think.

I'm not sure you could make an argument that we could've done a lot worse except maybe 2016.

Not in 2016 but in 2017 Minnesota hires a good one. In 2013, he was 1-11 in his first year at Western Michigan. In 2016, he went 12-0 at Western Michigan. In 2017, he went 5-7 in his first year at Minnesota. This year he’s 10-1. We missed **** out of that guy but I agree on your 2007 and 2011 though.

In 2011, I'd have been a fan of hiring Dana Holgerson. Another dude off the Mike Leach tree. I've wanted to see Miami with a spread offense for awhile.

In terms of a candidate who would be the Miami AD's wet dream, David Shaw. Obviously not having a great year but he's had five 10 win seasons in 9 years. Does a lot with some very tough recruiting standards.

I agree with you on Shaw.

I'm just pointing out that there are not a ton of "oh, we should have hired THAT guy" types out there in those particular years, except for 2016.

Patterson over Coker or Butch in '07 and we'd be coasting right now.

I wouldn't take '19 Butch but he clearly showed his abilities still at UNC. Monster evaluator and recruiter there. Would've done very well back at UM then.

I don't think it make sense to look at Bootch as a potential Miami hire back when he was at UNC. I think the list is all coaches who Miami MIGHT have hired. They at least interviewed some unusual candidates like Leach but I don't think the school would even answer the phone if Davis was on the line. If there was one dude who was absolutely blacklisted by Miami and there was a 0.00% chance of even getting a look, it was Bootch Davis around that timeframe.

He went 15-17 in the ACC with those monster recruits though.

You're not exactly looking at this the right way. That isn't the list of coaches that we had to pick from. We could have very well gone out and hired away a guy like Leach. We missed out on not even pursuing better coaches or even giving guys that wanted the job a chance like Leach and Mullen.

Suspensions. Coming into a garbage program. There's more context here.

Excluding the vacated wins his win percentage was up there with Mack Brown back in the day...right back into the NCAA not skipping a beat.

We would've been one year removed from back to back 9 win seasons. Just a few from Peach Bowl, Orange Bowl, NCs.

He would've come in and killed it then IMO.

No, I explicitly mentioned that from the beginning. I just posted the list of guys who DID change jobs as a starting point. I clearly said that I was not including guys that would have had to have been recruited away from other jobs.

And, has been stated, guys like Leach and Sumlin and Mullen WERE interviewed, even if they did not change employers during the year mentioned.

And we didn't hire Leach or Mullen so we definitely did miss out on some good hires which goes against what you were saying in the first place. Even Patterson from TCU was interested and we shut the door on that. We were never going to hire a Saban like you said, but there were numerous good and proven coaches that we just straight rejected for silly reasons.

Those suspensions would’ve been at UM right along with him.

That's a load of bullcrap. Butch built the best team in college football history at UM and the guys didn't go off on paid weekends with agents. There was a sense of entitlement at North Carolina that the football players learned from the basketball players.

That’s been the case every time we’ve hired a coach since Butch left. Bunch of lousy coordinators and Golden, all of which were terrible. Richt was the exception and he was totally burnt out. This bunch of morons are not capable of making an even marginally good coaching hire.

Shaw?...LOL.

He's good for Stanford, but He'd be the Black Al Golden at Miami.

And He's totally against players gettin' paid.
