Who Was The Last HC...

Oh, disagree. It is a huge part of the problem.

1. It requires the HC to do something that is almost impossible to do while also actually being the HC. See JJ's comments:

2. In our case, the play caller does not have an offensive system in place that is effective. That makes it even more problematic.

Two have done it in the last decade. It's far from almost impossible. In Jimmy's era I'd agree. But its more about X and O's than Jims and Joes now than it was then.

If a guy is hired as HC because he's a supremely talented play caller, let him call plays or have a huge hand in it.

Do we really believe Saban doesn't have a huge hand in every defensive call made?

There are possibilities, and there are probabilities. I don't think many can handle true play calling and HC duties. I also don't think the past national champions have shown that to be the mix you want to be successful:

I also think there is big difference between a "huge hand in it" and dedicated play calling.

Also, if it is now more about Xs and Os, then the HC has even more on his plate as dedicated play caller. Again, my opinion is that it is almost impossible. I did not say it could not be done. But I wouldn't want to build my system and structure around such model. How did that work for Jimbo longer term?
