Commited to GT.Freddie Wilson?
A great close would be not fumbling the season.![]()
You must not know Mario...

You mentioned recruiting. I wouldn't be surprised if he was texting recruits on the sideline. That may be why he never looks 100% engaged on the sideline. He's thinking of things to say or waiting for responses.A great close would be not fumbling the season.
You're absolutely correct about that. He's for sure relentless. I haven't seen anything "elite" yet. I mean... Definitely the best recruiter we've had in a while but that's not saying much. You mentioned recruiting. I wouldn't be surprised if he was texting recruits on the sideline. I think his "elite recruiter" badge should be changed to "relentless recruiter."

Mario can't sign top 5 classes because of Mario. He seems to be the only thing holding himself back from actually being an elite recruiter.Label him whatever you want, but the fact is, if Mario can't sign Top 5 classes here, nobody who we'd ever have a hint of a chance to hire would be able to either.
The dude IS an elite recruiter and he's got a lot of support from the key players here. I don't see anyone realistic we'd be able to hire who would get more out of recruiting than Mario would/is. So if we all think you need to stack ~Top 5 classes to compete for national championships, maybe it's time we all recalibrate. Because if this dude can't do it, you've got about a 0.1% chance of finding someone else who could.
Unless you think you can get Urban Meyer to come out of retirement.
I agree. If Mario can't do it here, no one else can. BUT... that still doesn't change the fact that he's not an elite recruiter. He's GREAT. The best we've had at Miami for some time. But how can you say he's elite with a class like last year???Label him whatever you want, but the fact is, if Mario can't sign Top 5 classes here, nobody who we'd ever have a hint of a chance to hire would be able to either.

I think it's actually less "himself" and more of his supporting cast the he chooses to put in charge of important recruiting decisions/infrastructure but that still ultimately falls squarely on his shoulders.

I agree that there aren't many recruiters types who could step in and do better based off of recruiting acumen alone. I also don't think we should even try to replace Mario "The Recruiter" Head Coach with another whose only specialty is recruiting. Like you said we would need someone who actually win games and evaluates and develops better. If that's the case, then yes of course it's on him. Actually, it doesn't matter what the case or reasons are, he's the man in charge and if any aspect of the program is falling short, it's on him.
But I disagree with the not being able to sign Top 5 classes because it's him. I don't think anyone else in his seat would be doing any better with recruiting, again within the realm of possibility. Yes, if we'd have hired Kirby Smart when we hired Mario, we'd probably be recruiting at a higher level. But I'm talking about realistic options, let's just say Mario goes 6-6 this year and 7-5 next year and he gets fired. Obviously hypothetical, there's a lot more to that discussion but for very easy argument's sake, let's say that happens. Is there anyone Miami would hire who would come in right away, or even in the first couple seasons, and recruit better than Mario has? I don't think so.
I think the best case is find some football savant who can take the talent we do have and win massively with it, and we roll those on-field results into Top 5 classes. But good luck finding that. If Mario can't recruit at the level we all think we need in order to compete for championships nationally year after year, then we might just be cooked. We'll see.
I see your point. I agree and don't get me wrong, I'm definitely a Mario supporter. I'm not saying he should be let go based on the recruiting part or anything like that. I just felt like if he was on that ELITE tier, our classes would look a lil different. I'm also not trying to be unappreciative of what he has done so far either.Because Jimmy Johnson was an elite football coach, but he never lost fewer than 4 games in a season at Oklahoma State.
Then he came to Miami, and then the Cowboys, and was a multi-time championship winner.
Sometimes, no matter how elite you are, you cannot overcome your circumstances. And this isn't defending Mario, I don't have a dog in the fight, if he can't win here, get him the **** out. Nobody is bigger than the program. I'm just starting to realize, like many of us are, that there might be a legitimate ceiling here for essentially any coach. Recruiting-wise.
