If schools themselves want to start paying the players, admit that the players are employees and cutting players in on the tv deals all while dealing with a player union then I'm sure contracts will be right around the corner.

Enter the portal and see how bad your current program wants you. Essentially the entire country is on one-year rental deals with free agency. Every single good kid after every single season can just go seek out the biggest deal. Maybe it's at the school you're already at. Maybe it's not. Gonna be really hard to manage this only running half the NFL model, meaning we'll pay you to play here, but there are no contracts saying how long you'll stay.
