Which was the best Miami team that DIDN"T win the National Championship?

Has anything ever leaked out about Vinny throwing that game? It looked pretty obvious from the highlights.

It has been discussed a lot on this board and on the old Grassy/Scout board.

Those who are truly in the know still won’t come clean about it.

86 and 88 and 02. We should have 8 titles, no thanks to two monumental ref screwovers and an insane Testeverde meltdown.

In my humble opinion, our ‘86 team was THE GOAT. The talent on that team was unreal. While I loved JJ, I still think he was a major factor in our losing that game to Penn State. Ball inside the 7 and throw it three times?

1986 team was incredible and belongs at the top of the list in this discussion, IMO.

Word is that JJ & Stevens called runs, but Vinny kept checking out of the runs so he could throw.

If that’s true, JJ should’ve sent him to the bench after a few ints and let Toretta hand off to Highsmith for the win.

People dont realize how great that 86 team was.... The discussion was they may be the greatest team ever. We absolutely dominated that game. Pedo state was trash in comparison. They could not move on offense and our offense even with 7 turnovers had over 400 yards on them....
Vinny made some great throws in the game...and also some of the worst throws ever. JJ had to learn the hard way that game. So many players on that 86 teams had nice pro careers as well. **** shame...

The 86 team, who simply needed to hand the ball to Highsmith every time to win, is our best team to never win it.

Instead of Jimmy doing the obvious, he got thoroughly out coached by Joe Pa, while Vinny gave us a preview of his upcoming NFL career in a mind numbing loss.

Most frustrating Canes game ever..
I was screaming at the TV take Testaverde out and give Geof Toretta some downs...I'd love to ask JJ why he didn;t.

That loss was on gary stevens, not jimmy, ... at least not entirely.
From what I was told by players, Testaverde kept checking off to passes based on the defensive look. He was told not too but still kept checking off. PSU could not stop Highsmith, sad he didn;t get the ball more, also Toretta passed for the most yard that year in the one game he played becasue testaverde got injured in a moped accident.

I believe every starter on the 86 team had some time in the NFL

1986 hands down, you can thank vinny for losing that one.

Thank the coaching. PSU was dropping 7 and 8 guys back all night and not letting Vinny throw it. However, when we ran it, Highsmith was tearing them up. Jimmy should have run the ball more to force Penn State to put more guys in the box to stop the run thus opening up the pass.

The 86 team dominated PSU but lost ironically because our Heisman QB probably had the worst game of his career. Certainly his worse as a collegian and maybe ever.

If we play that game again 20 times we win 19 of them. We were like -5 or whatever it was turnover margin that game and still almost won.

This will be unpopular, but to be honest the 1986 team may have been the most overrated because the schedule was a joke. Yes, 86 squad was filled with future NFL players, but then so was the 1988 team. Yes, we beat Oklahoma in a classic. Florida wasn't very good. Neither was FSU. The 1988 was statistically a better defense against a tough schedule.

IMO 2000 The 11-1 team led by Ken Dorsey and coached by Butch that lost in the 2nd week at Washington 34-29 was the best.

They beat #1 FSU, #2 VT and the #7 Gators in the Sugar Bowl
