When did Golden "lose you?"

2012. The combo of getting killed by ND (41-3 was it?) and then not bouncing back and losing to UNC the next week.

But really, aside from what I saw on the field, he lost me a) upon further research of his track record against decent winning teams, and b) by refusing to toss No'D aside.

The VT game and everything after that. When he didn't get the Ped State job he acted like someone just ran over his dog for days. I admit I was actually surprised at his demeanor. It wasn't the face he had always presented to us, and it was very telling about the depth of his commitment to UM, IMO.

Golden hasn't lost me. He also NEVER had me to begin with.

Ive always taken it all with a grain of salt. I have kept an open mind and tried to be fair.

I blame him for the things I think he's failed at, other things I think people have unrealistic expectations of.

I said I would give him this season before I made my final call. So far its not off to a great start. I think he may have made a FATAL error in hiring Coley. Donofrio is bad enough, but you cant have two bad coordinators.

For me the bigger problem is how UM fits into the modern era of college football and the big money being thrown around now.

This is not the 80s anymore. I just don't think its as simple as "plug and play" and we are going to be winning MNCs again. UM cant afford to hire the big name top flight coaches. So regardless of what happens with Golden, my fear is that we are just going to be stuck in the same cycle of mediocrity, bringing in another unproven, "up and coming" HC, with a limited budget, who will take another 4-5 years to develop things and learn, and then maybe he can get us back, or maybe we have to scrap it all and start all over. All I know is we are on our 3rd HC in the last decade, and I don't have any faith that the administration is going to go out and hire the "right" coach.

This season will tell a lot about Golden's future here. If this team can improve, and exceed expecations, obviously he's not going anywhere. If we implode, there is a chance he could get the boot after this season, but with his contract and buyout, I don't think its likely. What may happen, is another middling mediocre season, where the defense improves, but the offense struggles under Coley and a True Frosh QB, and we are left with more questions than answers.

Im sure many will scream the "AG sucks" "Fire his @ss" "Get this fat greaseball out of my face" etc... but none of that is going to influence the administration. Alumni, ticket sales, donations, boosters, the media, and the BOT is what will influence the administration. So the LIKELIEST outcome, is that we are still going to be here next season, having this same discussion.

I will say that regardless of what happens THIS year, IF he is still here next year, he has to win the Coastal or I think he's legitimately gone. He has NO excuses left with anyone. As fans, I understand there is impatience here, and that he has little to no excuses left with much of the FANBASE, but that doesn't mean that he's all out of time with the powers that be.

Barring a total meltdown this year, next year is his Do or Die year.

CANE4LIFE,

I agree with just about everything you said. I, for one, realize the college football landscape has changed and it is very unlikely that we will ever rise to the level of domination that we once had here.

That said, I don't feel like my requirements from our head coach are all that far-fetched. 1) Bring in good talent (not that difficult, given the location, history, and brand name of the school). 2) Develop that talent. 3) Get the most out of your guys on gameday. This might not mean competing for a national championship every year. Maybe it means we're a top 25 team that is a true competitor once every 10 years? But meeting these requirements is all that I ask for given Miami's situation and the state of college football now.

Golden and company do a lot of things well, but they have yet to prove they can develop any talent, and it is now beyond argument that they absolutely suck at #3. Be it scheme, play-calling, or their conservative natures. I don't care. They've had more then enough time to figure it out, and I actually think we're getting worse.

Time to move on, Al. Please.

Get your horny levels under control CAPS.

I don't have a specific moment. But last year I expected us to get smashed by any team with a pulse. And we did just that. I expect the same thing this year and it is happening and will continue to. I realized he was a terrible game day coach in 2012.

Only Caps can say Golden never had him, then go on a ******* rant the length of a novel convincing himself Golden will be here next year, and that we better not fire him because we can't afford/find anyone better.

You got a ******* ***** loose, pal.

thinking back at it...he lost me at "Hello I am Al Golden..." What blinded me was our previous staff.

But in all seriousness, I began to really feel iffy about the guy after he failed to fire Dorito at the conclusion of last season. He then began pouring koolaid and got me believing again....I am done with this amateur after the 2nd UL loss. Guy cannot improve were it counts...on the field. He does a lot of things well unfortunately corching and making tough decisions about staff are not his strengths. I believe he is a good guy and has good intentions but he just will never succeed here because he is too stubborn.

After the Louisville bowl game. Like a scorned lover, he crept his way back into my good graces with a solid recruiting effort over the offseason. The marriage is officially over as of 9/1/14. If we lose any recruits as a result of his termination, I'll have to chalk it up to collateral damage.

What really sucks is I want(ed) him to be the guy. I think he's a good person. The image of him with Malcom on the ground when hurt is something I'll never forget. But damnit, dont **** up my Canes football...

Yeah, its called "reality" pal. If he wins 7-8 games, he's not going to get bought out with 5-6 years left on his contract.

And its all well and good to say "bring in someone else", but WHO? The last two times we rolled the dice and look what we came up with. Its not like we have some superstar waiting in the wings to come in here.

My post was not about defending Golden at all, its about facing REALITY. This administration has shown DEFINITIVELY that they are NOT going to spend big money on a big name coach. They have NOT put together impressive lists of candidates for this job. And frankly, it doesn't appear that many big names have given it any serious thought. Apart from the endless mental *********ion of some of our more delusional fans, like yourself, the best coaches in America are NOT lining up to coach here.

So there has to be a cost/benefit analysis done as to how and when you get rid of Golden. Do you swallow another HUGE buyout to get rid of a guy who won 7-8 games, and is almost GUARANTEED to have a better team next year with a more seasoned and mature QB? Or do you squeeze him to bring in a better OC and offensive staff, and hope that next year he can make the ACCCG? You can send out "feelers" to a "wish list" of top HCs and see if someone will bite, but if they don't, then what? Roll the dice again to end up with the HC from Northern Illinois? And start all over again on another 5 year "process"?

Ive been a dedicated fan of this team for over 3 decades. Ive sat through the good and the bad. And I only want what is best for this program, and for it to win and succeed. IDGAF about Golden or any other coach. If they fail, they can get f*cked and take a hike. But I also deal in reality. Not the hot headed fantasy world that some of you live in where we are going to fire every coach after 1 or 2 bad seasons and just keep dreaming about Jimmy Johnson and Nick Saban, when its plain as DAY that this administration is NOT going to spend 4-5 Million a year on a coach. **** they wont spend 3 Million! We couldn't even get the bottom rung of SEC coaches interested in this gig, LOL.

THAT's reality pal. You have to weigh ALL the factors, INCLUDING what you stand to gain by firing him after this season, weighed against his record and performance this season, when deciding if its worth it or not. Its real easy to sit on a message board and pop off about "buy him out", but if the U has to eat 5 or 6 million dollars or MORE to do it, whose going to pay for that? And that will pretty much handcuff the ability to bring in ANY coach worth a sh8t. It will be Randy Shannon hire part II at BEST.

No chance I'm reading yet another novel by you, which is basically more of you sounding like a battered wife saying "well, I can't do any better if he leaves me!"

You'd rather cling to your savior instead of firing him, knowing full well he's not the answer, and going out to find someone who can win here. You're pathetic.

Grow a pair, pedophile.

I want to believe he can get it done...I truly do because he does so many things well. Unfortunately, all of these "things" do not directly positively impact our performance or result in wins. He gets an "A" for his administrative and public relation skills. He gets an "A" for his recruiting abilities (DT notwithstanding). He gets an "A" for effort. Unfortunately, he gets an "F" for his coaching abilities, hiring decisions, motivational abilities and, most importantly, results on the field.

You cannot average those grades as head coaches in today's modern college football landscape are judged by the product on the field and ultimately, wins and losses. Period. That's the final exam and the only grade that counts. Al Golden is failing and lost - justifiably so - many of his supporters.

In theory, Golden hasn't "completely" lost me. I became "neutral" after the Duke game and "extremely doubtful" after Monday night. He has the remainder of this season to show me he can coach and win games against quality opponents. In my view, he's earned the right to finish the year and prove his doubters - which includes me - wrong. However, it is highly unlikely that he will do so.

It's unfortunate but or AD needs to immediately begin working on developing a strategy for a replacement hire.

Now, don't try and be the cool guy and say, the Maryland game in 2011, or after his first press conference. For me, it was somewhere around the Wake Forest game last year, though the nail in the coffin was the Va Tech game. I stopped defending him after the Kansas State game in 2012, though I didn't start attacking him until the next season.

Just to play off of that, I got to thinking, and I stopped supporting Coker after the UNC and Clemson losses in 2004, though I didn't start ripping him publicly until the GT loss in 2005. I did have reservations about him going back to 2002, because I remember thinking, with all of this talent, we sure did play down to a lot of our opponents that year (WVU, Rutgers, even FSU). With Shannon, I stopped supporting/defending him after the GT game in 2008, though I didn't start ripping him until the next year. Some after the Clemson game, mostly after the UNC game, and all broke loose after the Wisconsin debacle.

Exactly....

UNC got me nervous, but I said "hey, it's a night game away, maybe they just came to play"...then Wake was when I had enough, and Va Tech and Duke just had me wanting to break things.
