From the mod on the FSU 247 site who is dialed in at IMG:
I think it's partially that Steve Walsh is coming in and tightening things up a bit. New director of football, needs to establish himself and let the kids know they're not going to get away with anything cause Weinke is gone. I also think some of this comes from the admin at IMG. Some of the backlash they've gotten was an unintended consequence of what they were doing. Weinke didn't give a f*ck about any of it. But there's plenty of people there now that care. I think IMG is working to improve their image.
I have no inside info on this particular event, but from being around IMG, I have the sense that they're hearing more of the criticism from the media, coaches, parents, players... it's starting to bother them and I think they're tightening up the way they do things.
Weinke just didn't give a ****. He was told to win and he was given the word to recruit the best players. Weinke is a robot. Anybody that has interacted with him probably knows what I'm talking about. He was on a mission to assemble and build one of the greatest high school football programs ever assembled. And he didn't care who's feelings got hurt or what people had to say. I think that's the only way to do it If you're going to recruit and take the best players out of their hometowns, you better be able to take the heat. Weinke could take the heat because he truly didn't care what people had to say about him or his program. But most people aren't like that, which is normal, and I think the people at IMG care now. Part of cleaning up the perception might be to be stricter on grades and discipline
The mod is pretty good and fair when he reports. Basically when you're a world class training facility who trains most of the ATP tour and lots of pro athletes, plus the kids who aren't on "scholarship" pay around 40-65K for class, training, room + board, you can't have the 35 HS age kids who think they're gods gift to the world running the show. They've taken a beating as far as players not caring about going to class, drugs, and the HS football kids acting like prima donnas. Remember their football program is relatively new and can't compete in the FHSSA playoffs because of what they are...basically a prep school for college football. Money talks and the HS football team doesn't do anything for that school to be honest. It's a drop in the bucket and most of those kids don't pay to go there.
