What we need to be elite...

Either through strategy or lack of training. the LBs have zero field awareness. They are competent at attacking across the line but, honestly, when was that last time you saw a LB tip, let alone intercept a pass. And isn't there some LB responsibility for LB coverage on backs or tight ends leaking into the secondary. And ball awareness in the secondary. in the bowl, there were not a lot of blown coverages for the touchdowns, but the secondary forgot a simple principle that the objective of the guy they are covering is to catch a ball thrown in their direction and, sooner or later its coming towards them but with no disruption by the secondary.

The Jimmies and the Joes matter. We have heard about our DTs going pro after the game. That could be good sign. If our top juniors stay we get death and senior leadership. Plus we have more men on the field instead of kids who are still growing. In football the diffference bewtween 18 and 22 is huge, especially on the line and defense. We are not using the Bama, Clemson magic juice so we need a little age to balance it out. OU and NE where putting out “enhanced” players back in the day too and we beat them. We can do it again.

Has it been confirmed that both of them are leaving?

Not that I have seen.

More physical safties that have ball skills
A Qb with the ability to truly play the position
Revamped offensive scheme with better play design and more offensive plays overall
More talent and depth at cb
A more sound defensive scheme with a coordinator that can dial up plays to get the D off the field on 3rd downs
A rb with the ability to make the 1st tackler miss not just head north and south and try to break tackles

What kind of RB is Lingard? Don't think he's the Saquon Barkley power back type. More like a very elite version of Homer. Lingard was 6', 190 last I looked. Barkley, in contrast, is 5'11, 230.

Also, at QB, you're asking/expecting a lot out of a QB (whichever one it is) who has never taken a game snap in college.

58% comp is not asking alot of a QB, regardless of experience.
Clemson's Bryant is at 67%

And no, I'm not saying Perry is Bryant.
Not yet anyway.

Something I've noticed is CMR will get stuck in caliing one type of play or formation for individual drives. like 6 throws consecutively and on another drive 3 consecutive Wildcats. I was confused all season as to why Jeff Thomas or Dallas weren't being used on sweeps or any trick plays, I mean Deejay played QB in high school, right? How much of the offense stalling do you think is actually due to a supposed lack of talent when we seem to have weapons that aren't being used very effectively and CMR's playcalling seems to be as streaky as Rosier?

I believe that we will be in the playoffs next year, but it will take a year or two at minimum to fix the problems golden left us.

I appreciate the post but it was impossible not to pause at that sentence. So we're going to make the playoffs while we're just starting to figure things out and replenish the roster?

That seems to be somewhat of a theme around here. Far too much confidence in how close we are. Teams don't make the playoffs on a lark or while shining their shoes. Just to get back to where we were in the Clemson game we've got to pull out all the games against teams we don't severely out man, no matter how much we'd like to pretend otherwise. Then you've got two teams on the other side of the conference that allowed less than 6 YPA in Clemson and Florida State. One of them figures to be sitting there in that conference title game. Florida State's problems could not be more overstated. I'd love to be taking over a struggling program that allowed 5.8 YPA, or tied for 3rd in the nation.

Obviously we need better players. A goal next season, IMO, should be a YPPA Differential of +2.0 or higher. That's when you start to threaten national legitimacy. Keep the defensive YPA below 6.0 and get the offensive YPA at 8.0 or higher and then we can compete with the top dogs.

For reference, the 2001 team averaged 8.1 YPA and allowed 5.2 for a YPPA Differential of +2.9. It intercepted 27 passes while allowing only 5 touchdown passes. That's what set that pass defense apart. There have been several teams below that 5.2 recently but none of them had a TD/INT ratio anything close to 5/27. When Alabama set the all time modern standard of 4.3 YPA allowed in 2011 -- a mark that most likely will never be matched -- the Crimson Tide had only 13 interceptions, while allowing 6 touchdown passes. This year's Alabama team currently leads the nation at 5.5 YPA with 15 interceptions and 7 touchdown passes surrendered.

Here is what we need in every position to become elite and national championship competitors.

Quarterback:
We just need Perry to be what hes hyped to be. We need a guy 58% plus completion percentage and makes smart decisions and is mobile.

Running back:
Homer is good and deejay is a baller but dont kid yourself we need a legit all purpose back who can power it up the middle for a consistent 4 yards when needed and can take it to the house at any time. We need lingard to be this because every great canes team had a guy like this. Homer has great speed but lacks vision and creativity and deejay lacks strength and blocking skills. We need a guy with all of the above.

Fullback:
Realus George nuff said.

Oline:
We need one elite left tackle and guard depth. It is happening in our recruiting classes. We need BADLY for kai leon herbert to step up next year.

Tight End:
We will have great freshman tight ends just need them to get more experienced.

Wide Reciever:
One more 6 foot 1-5 that can block and be relied on to start opposite richards. Hope cager steps up. We need harley and thomas to be pure slot recievers.

D Line:
Simple as this. We need BOTH RJ and Norton to come back and we need DJ to stay and work and D Jax to get better and ready to start.

Linebackers:
Disappointing year for sure. They need to get better at tackling and need to learn how to cover. It will help if owens stays and the young guys to help with depth.

Corners:
We need a true number 1 corner who can shut down opposing teams number 1 wide. MJ will be fine as a number 2 corner but dont fool yourselves he is not there yet. Yall praise Malek Young but he is a JAG right now. He cant tackle and unless he figures this out fast he wont play.

Safety:
Jaquan has a great football IQ and instincts but we need only one undersised d back in at a time. Im sick of running backs breaking a million tackles on our safeties and corners.

Special teams:
Feagles will get better Im confident in that. Im scared af for bubba baxa as a frosh and we need to learn to block and tackle in special teams.

We need to fix these things before we can compete for nattys. Say what you want but look at any canes natty team and tell me we didn't have those things.

I believe that we will be in the playoffs next year, but it will take a year or two at minimum to fix the problems golden left us.

I think richts playcalling has been good. What else can he do besides more eyecandy sweeps and such. We have an offense based on trickery and all that because we have a bad line and a god awful quarterback.

Yall will stop hating on richts playcalling when we have a better line, qb, and running back.

Im just stating facts. Downvote if you dont like it and GO CANES!!!

Agree with your asssesment.

Our OL gets absolutely no push. We can’t get short yardage first downs for **** unless it’s a trickery play or a Rosier running it. Notice how much time Wisky’s OL gave their $hitty QB to make his throws. Dude almost always had a clean pocket.

I am hopeful that we will address this with the ‘17 and ‘18 guys who should be ready to contribute next year.

The DL is my main concern. Both RJ and Kendrick need to come back. Kill that NFL talk. If we can’t get a true 3-Deep DT rotation next year then forget about taking the next step. We’ll keep getting pushed around by stronger OLs.

If RJ and Kendrick come back with strong contributions from Willis, Bethel and Ford then Martin and Nesta making modest contributions, then we’ve got a shot.

We will have a chance to be elite when we consistently see:

Our kickoff team killing returners inside the 15 yard line. That's when u know u have savages all over the roster.

Our kick return teams getting multiple tds per season

Those two things show ur depth is filled with young elite players

We haven't been able to have either since early 2000's

Watch these playoff teams play coverage. They have elite athletes all over. We don't

New coach, that is exactly why UGA canned hm. Kirby is killing it up there and ihs teams are playing to full potential. Not the Richt like UGA years.

God will we ever be at that bama level? Fuq is there hope someone tell me please, no homers just real football gurus

Our DL seem to be coached to just slip through the gap and they get washed out a LOT. It was really noticeable against Whisky.
