And Vilma. Friend, big Canes fan, went to the campus summer 2001. The team was working out outside, no coaches, with Vilma yelling at them to work harder. That's the x factor. They all bought in, and didn't want to be the weakest link

Players held each other accountable …. I believe there were a few brawls in the locker room when players didn’t make their summer workout times

Player led team. Player led workouts that were mandatory. A QB that was usually the smartest person on the field.

From my recollection, there was a lot of hitting, sticking, and ****-busting...

High-IQ players who knew where to be. Vilma, Williams, Dorsey, Shockey, O-Linemen. You hear them speak and see what they do after playing and realize that these are intelligent, successful guys.

Guys with truly heightened instincts with a nose for the ball like Reed. Things you can't teach.

When I think back on that year, I remember the Boston College and VT games and our guys had to dig deep and they had each others back. That only comes from holding each other accountable during all the workouts and practices.

That said, if Butch had stuck around for one more year, they would absolutely dominated those two teams.

They had no weakness. Coaching was the only question but was player lead team. Maybe that was the secret sauce !

That team was a semi pro team in terms of talent. They were mentality tough. The only weakness was the hc coach coker. I could've coached them to a natty that is how talented they were.

Everything was earned. They played behind studs, worked hard, and were studs themselves when they were called.

Today you don’t play you just go through the motions until the portal opens up.

No - it was not the secret sauce, but more our saving grace that year as we barely escaped twice that year.
And… We should have EASILY repeated the following year too.

Both years showed why coaching matters and can either enhance or impede a teams potential.
