As a kid, I looked up to Santana Moss. He was the player who got me into the Canes. I remember being enamored by the attitude and force we played with. We made other teams fear us. Before even stepping on the field, the opposition knew who we were and what we were going to do. The country hated us. The NCAA hated us. That was the coolest feeling as a fan. Being the "Bad Guy". We embraced being the villain and smiled in the face of all those who tried to hate on us for our style of play.

We lost that identity. We have no identity. We haven't had an identity since Coker (where the identity began to fade). Shannon came in, all we heard about was the graduation rate and guys flying around. He brought in a huge class on paper, and let all those kids waste their talent. We had players during that time, some who we thought had that old Miami attitude, but we had too many entitled, lazy, kids during that time. No one was holding each other accountable. They had The U on their helmet so they felt that they had "made it".

Then came the Golden era. Again, we landed some really good players, who underperformed. Now that underperformance could have a lot to do with coaching and teaching, but we also had many lazy players on those teams. Lets not forget the Dequan Ivory's and the ice cream sandwich man. We actually had a pretty good offense with Coach Fisch. We could put up points, but I still didn't feel any kind of identity as a team. Probably because everyone was against the staff. We had lots of posts about kids just playing for themselves and the NFL. I can't blame them, but is that Miami football? Roster was full of kids who would never play or get the opportunity to play at Miami in the dominate days. Kids who would have been better served to play at small D1 schools.

Golden came and went and we went into the Richt era. Again, he brought in some very good players. We won some games, we won the coastal, but we saw the holes that still remained. Coach Richt has not given us an identity. It's basically the defense, and the rest of the team. There really isn't any excuse for how poorly the offense has played over the years Richt has been here. I can't with the "execution" excuse. By now, we should be executing. We have the talent to put up at least 30 a game. I can't put blame on one source. We had a self-made QB issue, we have an OL that have multiple kids playing out of position, and an offensive game plan that should be deleted and never used again. Screens to Langham or Cager, fades to Harley, no trickery, no major use of our TEs, no special plays for our playmakers. Jeff should have been a household name; that's how good he was and how underutilized he was. Its very sad to see how little the offense has grown if any.

That brings me to what we need: AN "I DON'T GIVE A ****" ATTITUDE. If its Richt or whoever is next, make these kids earn their U. Instill fire and controlled violence in the players. Thats the identity we once had. We have some kids on the team who possess that and I appreciate it. On offense, we should have nasty dudes on the line; Grave diggers. Give me a line coach that isn't all talk.... Give me a real QB coach.... Give me a real OC.... It's like being within a fingertips reach of who we want to be, but never getting close enough. Richt, you haven't won a ship, if you're still coaching for that opportunity, you need to make changes. You need to let the dogs loose. You need to give us an identity on both sides of the ball. You're on the clock. The IPF can't save you.

What we need is for the BOT to realize they aren't the Harvard of anywhere. This schools biggest calling card outside the alumni base with an inflated image of the prestige of their diplomas is football and the weather. It is time to do what Miami is good at and is known for, the charade of climbing the US news polls for a few years is over, it is slipping again. Time to re focus on what is really important.

100%

Without the football, who really knows anything about the school tbh.

I don't see that attitude being installed when doesnt appear the HC has it. He is a laid back HC who thinks the ways of the past will work still. Richt had to believe coming back would bring/get him all the talent, that hasn't happened yet.

I am guessing this pretty much describes you and the rest of the easily distracted fan base. If you think Miami is not a quality institution, then you are sadly misinformed.

Not saying that at all, but the football team has done a lot for the school.

Attitude... swagger... whatever.

I dont think you can instill that in kids without winning, thats putting the cart before the horse.

The key to this whole thing is staff hires. Assemble a great staff and you'll win/croot/swagger. This doesnt have to be so difficult.

Why are there so many people who think you can't be good at football and be respected academically at the same time? It can be done.

It is more difficult, but it can be done.

I don't keep track of U.S. News rankings or any of that these days, but is it true that the University of Miami is slipping in the polls from an academic perspective? And this is after a concerted effort by the school to focus more on academics and less on football?

If so, that's an epic failure and shows the true need for change starts at the top. It's one thing for the school to focus on academics as a top priority. It's another to do so and then watch the rankings slip.

Agree with many of your points, OP. I've felt for a while that one of the core issues for our program right now (that goes beyond any staff as it's been the case with several staffs now) is this idea of "swagger" has been distorted. These kids commit to Miami, get to wear The U on their helmet and just inherently think they now have swagger and the right to flaunt it. No, that sh-t was EARNED by the great teams of the past! They had swagger because they knew they'd come out on the field and kick the opponent's ***. And that's exactly what they did. Nowadays we have kids jumping on field logos before games and starting sh-t in warmups only to go out and lose, and oftentimes lose badly. It's become perverse. And it unfortunately fits perfectly with and fuels the modern day me-first diva types. We need to shelf the whole idea of "swagger" at Miami until we've earned it again.

what we need is to rid of the slurpers (including fans, admins, ad, bot) that support mediocrity
until this changes the school will be happy with 7-5 and low levels bowls on a yearly basis as long as the program stays clean

It is indeed slipping in those rankings. I checked for myself to see if it was true when I heard people on here talking about it. We are now at #53 but used to be in the forties a handful of years ago.
