What recruits should know about Shannon...

Randy Shannon is a loser.

The guy should send Jeff Bowden 10% of his salary annually.

Jimbo Fisher absolutely owned Randy.

In a group conversation with Shannon at a Canesfest when he was our defensive coordinator, he was asked about playing freshmen. He was adamant about not playing them because they cannot be trusted to carry out their assignments. He went on to say that playing one would be as a last resort. Now that he will be calling the shots at UF I'm guessing his philosophy will remain the same. Conversely our staff is not afraid to put true freshmen on the field and coach them up.
I wonder if they'll give Randy a working headset

I agree that Shannon was and is bad. No one is disputing that. However, Shields was a WR when he inherited the team. You can debate that Shannon should have identified his ability at CB earlier? Maybe. Should he have gotten better coaching at Defense his Sr. year? Sure. But he really only had 1 season to develop at that position.

Technically.... Shannon was his coach for 2 years prior to moving him to CB. Shields was recruited by Coker as a WR and played there in 2006 under Coker. When Shannon took over, Shields was coming off a FR season where he was a Freshman All American. Why move him to Def at this point? So, his Sophomore year he struggled under a new OC (Patrick Nix was pretty awful).

I'm not the biggest fan of Randy Shannon, but to say that Shields lack of development was on him is not fair. At least Shannon saw his potential at CB and moved him there. This ultimately made Shields a lot of $$ in the NFL.

To be fair.. Shields converted to CB and only played there 1 season.

and they all regressed(outside of Spence) under Shannon too. His inability to develop talent is his biggest problem, and Sam Shields is his biggest example. Had no clue how to play corner, read offenses or even watch film. That kid shoulda been a top 10 pick.

Thats not even a bigger inditement of Shannon? He was his head coach for 3 years.....

I'm sorry but this is stupid. He is one of the top CB talents in the world, and yet went undrafted due to his lack of development in college. The kid had zero clue how to even look at film. High school CBs have seen better coaching. Shannon is more responsible for that than anyone else.

Freshmens can play in Shannon's defense if they have the physicals but they also need the mentals

Sean spence stated as a freshmen, ray ray armstrong did too... Oliver Vernon... Marcus fortson..

Shields was a corner for about 6 months and made plays here. His worst games was against Okie. He was on the best wideout in the country during that time. SS won games for us that year. If anything it proved RS knew what he was doing because they tried to move Shields over since his sophomore year. Also those players did not tegress they were either suspended or injured. Ray was an all ACC 2nd team safety, Vernon was a true sophomore making plays, Forston had like double digit tfls and Spence was a straight beast. If anything his qb regressed.

the kid was a Freshman AA. You come in and automatically move a FR AA from WR to CB?

No its not. Especially if the kid was reluctant to change. You can't force a kid to switch. He woke up when he finally lost his position. Why force a kid to change when he's not going to give his all? RS knew he was valuable even when he was underachieving. He had him as a gunner on ST and if anything he probably became more confident through that. RS issue was his loyalty to Jacory.

How hard can it be? You don't even cover the TE so that frees up at least one defender to fly around making plays.
