Throwback story time:

Took me 8-10 months and talking to Miami's staff, including Andy Vaughn and David Cooney, trying to get them to offer Horton. I knew a lot about him through his trainer Jeremy Holt. Vaughn and Cooney didn't like his film and verified measurables and testing to even send it through to Likens to look at. I had offered him at ETSU before he "blew up" after transferring to Oakland from Ensworth (he got in an offense that would showcase his talents) and once I got out of the player personnel space I started pushing Miami on him, or trying to. He had 0 P5 offers at the time. Then, camp season opened up and he went to 4 camps and had 4 offers (Louisville, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia). I reached back out and still nothing... they thought they knew better than those 4 programs. Not even a camp invite. He could have camped there but he said he wasn't going without interest or an invite.

I finally connected the dots with former NFL WR from Nashville in Quinton Patton (a friend of his trainer who played for Rob Likens at La Tech) and he reached out to Likens himself and Horton almost immediately had an offer after watching his junior film. That eventually soured my relationship with Andy Vaughn and led to Cooney blocking me on twitter when I kind of gave him an "i told you so". I think I ranted on that on here to some but never mentioned it was regarding Zay Horton.

In the same breath I was throwing out Jordan James, another Nashville kid who ended up transferring to Oakland with Horton (close friends) who was desperate for an offer. He blew up in the spring and committed to Georgia and eventually ended up at and starts at Oregon. They wanted to play together and we could have had both I think. We ended up with Citizen at RB when Mario got here but I don't think Manny and his staff had a RB in that cycle but wouldn't even evaluate and consider James as an option. Andy Vaughn...again. If you wonder why our roster looked the way it did... that personnel staff was horrendous.

I remember arguing with dudes on here about Horton being better than Landon Ibieta or not... LOL might have to go back and bump those. I watched Horton dominate 2 of the best teams in the state his senior year in Maryville and Summit to win a state title. There was no doubt.

His trainer and Quinton Patton always said Horton was Mike Williams-like. I don't think he ever got that big or has that much physicality in his technique. Williams leans on guys in his routes and going for jump balls. Seems like Horton stayed more lean and finesse at a similar height/weight coming out of HS.

Reminds me a little of Lawrence Cager, taller receiver with some speed that's good to grab a few for large chunks at a time. I can see a little Ahmmon but I think AR was more fluid than Horton.
He’s much better than Cager ever was. Horton has a much better and fluid release, and much better hands. He is also faster.

Thank you for this great post! Shows you just how deep the bureaucracy has been at the U for the last 2 decades. Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Louisville all offered him, but he wasn’t good enough for the U. Andy Vaughn sucked at his job, and Cooney definitely was asleep at the wheel on this one. Horton might be my favorite WR on the team, along with X. He’s a dog.

Whenever you give people power, they overuse it man. Scouting is incredibly difficult to have a high hit rate on, so Idk why anyone should have the mentality of their evaluation is king. Especially from these "lower level" guys on College staffs. Like if these guys were excellent talent evaluators, they'd be in the NFL doing it.

More quality eyes on prospects evaluating tape is going to lead to higher probability of hits. Like sure you can get a prospect that is objectively bad, but if there is any question about the talent you should get more eyes on the tape, not eliminate it outright - ESPECIALLY when someone is specifically going out of their way to push a guy. It's worth taking a look at. That's how we got McConathy too...

How would you say it is now? Like obviously all you can really ask for is to give it a look, and to take the suggestion seriously. At the end of the day there can be lot of different reasons NOT to pursue, but not even showing tape or bringing the player up for further discussion is dumb as ****... Like I think it is @1murhurricane who was bringing a lot of guys to the staff as well, but Dennis Smith vetoed Trey McNutt... Now who knows why that was, and tbd if its a good call or not, but hopefully that also wasn't a similar situation....

Granted... McConathy's recommendation came from Philip Rivers. I'm no Philip Rivers. Jeremy Holt wasn't well known at the time either in the training space so his recommendation wasn't worth much either.

It all worked out. Likens kept an open line of communication and touched base with me pretty regularly to see what else I had. That stopped when he moved to Dallas lol. I eventually came down with some others that I knew that season after Likens trusted me to do it. Got me in with some others staffers still in the personnel dept at UM and got their blessing and took my word to bring in and at least evaluate others I knew personally like Johnathan Cline, Tyler Jeffries, and Kyron Jones.

They also shot down me pushing for them to look at Jaden Keller the prior year who is now at VT and is a pretty good LB. Manny wouldn't take any input at that position. It was his evaluation or nothing.

Out of curiosity, what were his verified testing times? His game speed is pretty solid.
