Doesn’t have to be college but curious on some non super star players you guys were huge fan of as kids. I don’t know why this conversation fascinates me throwing you back to early 2000s players.

- Ronnie Lee (Fins) may have begun my love of the TE position and how versatile some of those guys can be.

- Horace Grant when he was with the Magic came to mind, although I wasn’t really a “kid” kid, I was in my late teens/college, and he was still pretty big at the time. I loved that team because of Shaq, but I think I was just inspired by Horace because of the goggles and how it was different and how all the little kids looked up to him for that. I’m not even vision-impaired, but I thought it was cool. Back then, Magic Johnson was really the only other player that I knew of that was different in a health way, and that had such a major impact on all of us. I think I liked seeing a disability that people treated “better.” It seems so trite now, but y’all older folks know what I mean I’m sure.

*I’m going to throw in an Honorable Mention…
- 1986 NY Giants team

When I was a kid, we had to move up north from South Florida for a few years for my dad’s work. My dad, being a die-hard Dolphins fan, and also being depressed about now only being able to see the Fins on TV when they played the Jets (as this was the mid-80s), and detesting the Jets, but also being a huge sports fan, started watching the Giants on Sundays. And of course, I watched with him, as I already was used to watching all sports at all times.

This proved to be great timing, as that Giants team turned out to be pretty darn good. Bill Parcells was their coach, and along with Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor, their RB was none other than our beloved Ottis Anderson. (Fun fact: this is the team that began the Gatorade shower celebration!)

In many ways, that team got me hooked into football in a new way. I already loved the Canes and the Fins, but it was the first experience I had enjoying a team really win a championship (I was still a little young in 1983 for the full experience), and having Ottis Anderson from the Canes pipeline was also a huge deal to me. I immediately begged my parents for new posters of all the players for my room, and over the next couple of weeks, my room became half-pink ruffles and Cyndi Lauper, and the other half-NYG player rosters and schedules and pictures. Every little 80s girl’s dream. 🤣

BTW…back in 2000, I met Lawrence Taylor at an event. He thought this story was funny. Or maybe he was just humoring me. But we hung out for a while and he was very cool.

I was always a big fan of Mike Miller back in the day. Not a superstar but solid, could shoot lights out and played smart. Loved watching him quietly rack up points without much hype. Those guys were fun to root for because they felt more relatable than the big names.

Same. Mike Miller and J-Will were my favorite players from their Grizzlies days. Imagine my joy that they both ended up playing on the Heat.
