What if Mario would have….

I'll answer for op. Of course not. However, not reaching the ACC title game with this roster, in year 4, is a failure. We are the most talented team in the conference by far. Many on this board, including D$, said it was ACC champions or bust this year. We failed. Had our worst game when we needed our best game. Mario's philosophy and caveman ball is a large reason why. This team should have gone 12-0. Mario refused to change until it was too late. 10-2 is nice, but we still failed and will play in a meaningless bowl that we'll probably lose. Duke, with 5 losses, is playing for the conference title. Lol. Mario has undoubtedly increased the talent, but he can't coach. Louisville beat us because Brohm is a far superior coach. We had 2 weeks to prepare for Louisville. We lost, at home, to a team that lost 4 games.
No one wastes generational talents quite like the cave goon.

What if Mario had fixed the discipline, the turnovers, the third-down execution, the red-zone finishing, the composure — and stopped playing so conservative during SMU and LU!

We’d be playing for the ACC, not sitting on our knees hoping for a CFP miracle.

Two years in, and we’ve saw the same movie: penalties, sloppy mistakes, and playing not to lose. Don’t even get me started on the GTU fumble — still can’t believe that happened.

I’m tired of reading excuses. It’s not the refs. It’s not the ACC. It’s not Notre Dame, ESPN, or people “hating The U.”

The problem was Mario. Mario ruined 2 seasons in a row, 2 QBs, and the hopes of the U fan base!

Lets GO CANES!

Maybe you’re right/ maybe you’re wrong.

But also, maybe those points can be true along with the truth of um getting screwed by the committee.

I'll give credit to Mario for increasing the talent on this team with his relentless recruiting. He has also changed the culture over time to a team that is much tougher and mentally strong than in the past.

While I was frustrated with the direction of the offense mid-season I'm glad that he did adapt. He also made the great decision to turn over the D with a great hire of DC and position coaches.

We have been so mediocre for 20 years, I'm happy that we are close to being where we should be. Like one of the other posters said - Mario won't leave for another program after a good season, he's 100% Cane.

We can all criticize him for some of his decisions, but also note that he has improved his on field coaching over time.

Unfortunately it's going to be hard to get in the playoffs, but if we do I think we can make a run. He has been very good the last 2 years in big games (rivalry or top25 match ups), so we have that going for us.

What if the refs rightfully called that a fumble against SMU or maybe called the mugging in the end zone on the last play, or maybe didn't call some BS holding penalty against us when the DE fell at the guys feet and he falls on him.
and the DPI on our deep throw in the 4th, or the refs called holding on the 100+ plays they missed on Ruben Bain over the season.

Those are the things UM can’t control. The entire laundry list in the OP were things we could control. See the difference?
The point is that the SMU game was taken from us. We earned that win imo even with the issues we had. Notice I don't mention the Louisville game. We deserved to lose that game. You can get over some penalties here and there, but the SMU game had multiple bad calls at critical points of the game.

Common Miami did not play well that game, lack of preparation, we should NOT be crying about refs, we should have blown out a team ranked 50 plus in recruiting! Even if the held, mugged, and all the other excuses, we should have kicked their a$$es! We did not and it falls on Coach Cristobal!
AS I said to the other guy, we earned the SMU win, even with a bad game, but the refs made sure every opportunity we had to seal it was taken. If you want to talk about we needed to do better, Louisville was that game. We didn't take care of business on the field.

Mario wasn't my first choice, but I'll take this currently over where we've been the last 20 years. It's like people forgot we were praying for 8-9 win seasons not that long ago. You only get rid of Mario at this point if you know for a fact you have an actual proven winner that wants to be here and will take us to the next level.

Do you think the caveman really has the coaching ability to take us any further than this? Or is this his ceiling? He has shown consistency in two things, his ability to recruit and his ability to be out coached and out motivated by teams with lesser talent. It’s the latter that is the enemy within.

I'm not disagreeing, but we're in the discussion consistently now, and all you need is a few breaks to go your way. This is already better than most of college football teams with exception to a few blue blood teams. The problem is to get to the next level, you either need someone elite to defect from their already established program (highly unlikely), or you need to find the diamond in the rough ready to break out. Unfortunately, as we all know, there's a lot more fool's gold out there than diamonds ready to join the elite coaching ranks, and I'm not ready to go back to 7 win seasons every year.

Unfortunately, Miami has to be perfect to make things happen. They have to beat the opponent, the conference, the referees, and themselves. We have another set of rules to achieve the same.

I blame the penalties and play calling on the losses. More than Beck"s 4 picks against UL. As frustrated and disappointed as I was in mid season, we finally had a team adjust and look like it developed to finish the season. They changed my opinion finishing the season and now believing this is and should be a playoff team. Mario deserves way more accolades than he has gotten. Back to back 10 win seasons and this team deserves to be on the playoff. I would give Mario a raise. For the 10th time, no extension with 6 years remaining. **** of a job, coach and thank you.

I agree!

Earned? They played like pure mierda! That was SMU not UGA!

We still get the same participation trophy. Oh, and you can proudly wear a 2024 and 2025 Canes 10-2 tshirt.

The point you sunshine pumpers miss is we didn’t out coach anyone to get to 10-2. We got out coaches and outplayed to get to 10-2. It was the enemy within and what we left on the table for what could have been. So stop trying to sell this good vibes 10-2 like it’s a thing. It has bad after taste.
Has to be said one of the two losses was directly correlated heavily to 4 INT's (5 if not for a fluke penalty) moreso than any coaching mishaps

Duke playing for the ACC title means nothing. They arent getting in the playoffs. Who cares about conference championships? We underachieved against Louisville and SMU. Miami can either learn from those shortcomings or sit and cry about it. We will see what happens but I think Miami is going in the right direction. Sucks it took two losses to inferior opponents to cause the change

I’m sure he learned a valuable lesson in having your foot on the gas against teams that are inferior, these last weeks are some of the best complimentary ball I’ve seen us play since I can remember including last year with atrocious defense. shouldnt had to have had our backs against the wall to realize this hopefully next year they put it all together for a full season. GO CANES.

You hope. You’re not sure. Because he should have learned that lesson by now and certainly by the SMU game.
