What if - Butch Davis has returned in 2006?

Maybe - it comes down to the question of whether Butch would have taken a more active stance than Shannon against Shapiro. The problem is that the (relatively small scale) violations had been purportedly taking place as far back as the start of Coker's reign. Butch, Shannon, Leach, Golden or anyone else would have run into the Shapiro scandal going public in 2011.
I never saw Shapiro anywhere near UM prior too 2003....

If you think Butch would've let that Punk B*tch Shapiro ANYWHERE near Hecht or Greentree...then I have Absolutely nothing to say to you....
I would presume he wouldn't either. That at the very least, he would have been like Shannon and instructed the players to stay away from him. In this situation, the question would be would the administration make him a scapegoat in 2011 if he was still the head coach.

Butch would have taken over a program in the dumpster. He would have improved the program enough to at least win a few ACC Coastal titles, and a few conference titles. Perhaps retired by now, and reset the program in the long run. Or, once again fought with the Admin/BOT and returned to the NFL if an opportunity presented itself.

There has been a lot of talk about what if Butch had returned in 2016 when Richt was hired. But less talked about is the possibility that Davis could have returned a decade earlier. Now the immediate response is that UM felt slighted by Davis and if any return would have been thwarted by those feelings.

But let’s say that he does return. Does Shalala give him more of a budget to hire assistants, or is he as hamstrung as Shannon? Does Miami allow for additional spending to hire a nutritionist as SEC schools were loudly doing? And what affect does a Coach Davis have on Nevin Shapiro? Does the 2006 dip remain a blip and Miami returns to prominence by 2008, or does the rebuild take equally long as Shannon’s or longer? And how long does Davis remain as HC?
do you have a dorsal fin?

It was over at 2013 in ref to Butch...Anything after wasn't really happening...My only gripe during the last 18yrs concerning UM is, if Butch did what he did with evaluations and recruiting from 95-2000 under heavy penalties...Imagine what he would have done from 01 onward....Our 02..03..04 etc...classes would've been Staggering...I have Absolutely No doubt whatsoever...

I agree, had Butch stayed at Miami he very well could have had a run like Carroll, Saban and Dabo. Thrown in a few wins JJ missed (Tennessee and Penn State bowl games, the ND ‘88 game) and Miami not getting a chance at OU in 2000, and there’s a number of national championships Miami could have won.

Had he been hired then, he would have been as successful as he was in Charlotte. He would have been fired after 4 years with the same UNC record he had then. School would have same if not more sanctions against it as it received. Also, no BBB posts today.

13 years? Probably at least 9-10 more National Championships.

Can't win every year - Only so much room in the trophy case.
