There has been a lot of talk about what if Butch had returned in 2016 when Richt was hired. But less talked about is the possibility that Davis could have returned a decade earlier. Now the immediate response is that UM felt slighted by Davis and if any return would have been thwarted by those feelings.

But let’s say that he does return. Does Shalala give him more of a budget to hire assistants, or is he as hamstrung as Shannon? Does Miami allow for additional spending to hire a nutritionist as SEC schools were loudly doing? And what affect does a Coach Davis have on Nevin Shapiro? Does the 2006 dip remain a blip and Miami returns to prominence by 2008, or does the rebuild take equally long as Shannon’s or longer? And how long does Davis remain as HC?

At least a third of the posters here would be trying to make a convincing argument that 17 national championships was enough for any team and we should fire Butch just to give other teams a chance.

Had he been hired then, he would have been as successful as he was in Charlotte. He would have been fired after 4 years with the same UNC record he had then. School would have same if not more sanctions against it as it received. Also, no BBB posts today.

Please stop pretending that Nevin Shapiro gave anything significant to our players. They only thing close to significant is that he helped pay a girl for an abortion. That girl was not on our team. Everything else is alleged Vodka consumed at clubs

He would have scared Saban off from taking the Bama job. Saban would have looked at the hire and told Bama no thanks. He wouldn’t want compete against the goat.

Yes, that’s pretty much what I thought as well. That his second tenure at Miami would end in much the same way as UNC. His first reign at Miami would be known for leading Miami through sanctions and to the cusp of a championship. His second reign would be recalled as a path to a new set of sanctions.

The only thing Shapiro gave was the NCAA the excuse to try to give Miami what Penn State got. Other programs get special privileges. Miami does not, and Shapiro’s gift have the NCAA an easy target to bolster their claim that they go after all programs.

UNC’s not close to Charlotte. I was in Raleigh yesterday. It’s pretty close to there.

Maybe the point is that butch wasn’t successful in Charlotte because he was never there? That, or we have some geographically challenged posters.

Maybe - it comes down to the question of whether Butch would have taken a more active stance than Shannon against Shapiro. The problem is that the (relatively small scale) violations had been purportedly taking place as far back as the start of Coker's reign. Butch, Shannon, Leach, Golden or anyone else would have run into the Shapiro scandal going public in 2011.
