What I See With Texas A&M

I like their offense, but I like our defense more. I don't think they'll be able to establish the run against us, which will put them in obvious passing situations. Reed will make plays, but as long as we're disciplined in the back end and limit the big play we should be alright.

I don't like their defense. They're talented but undisciplined. Dawson should be able to scheme our receivers open and I think we can gash them with the run game. We just need to protect Beck and play clean.

I think a key to this game is to keep their offense off the field. I think we will find a way to control the TOP. Thanks for your breakdown OP. I was just watching their game vs UF, though UF moved on them well to start the game. Didn't see a ton of pressure either. I'll work my way to watch some of the games you posted as well. Go Canes
Agreed. This is the perfect opponent to play "Mario Ball" against. It's best we try to avoid a shootout.

When I watch their offense I dont think they care to establish the run.. They run to keep teams honest but I would think in playoffs QB run will be green lit even more so.. Their offense is more so to hunt explosives.. Run keeps them on track and then set up from there..

Agreed with their defense, I was surprised that this was an Elko defense, lol.. Gave me Manny Vibes if it was in SEC..

Reed is the classic example of high-risk/high-reward. He’s going to make some incredible plays which leave you gobsmacked, only to follow it up with a terrible one. If you look at Beck over the last month, I think he’s been the best QB in America (11 TD’s 1 INT., completing almost 80% of his passes, 270+ yards) I think a lot of people are sorta overlooking him heading into the playoffs, but this is exactly why he came to Miami…to prove the doubters and the haters wrong.

Second, Texas who doesn’t even have a good running game, ran all over A&M when they played a couple weeks ago. A&M is very soft against the run and we should be able to have our way with them on the ground.

My biggest concern for this game is the fact it’s on the road in one of the most hostile environments in all of sports, not just college football. We can’t have another one of these slow starts. We need to jump on them early and take the crowd out of the game.

The last thing I’ll say about this matchup is that this is the type of team Mario constructed this roster to go against. When they first line up against our D-Line and O-Line and experience how big and physical they are their initial thought will probably be, “Are they sure this is an ACC team, and not an SEC one?”

This is what I'm most worried about. We just haven't been a good running team all year and this will be one of the better fronts we play.

Why do you think we'll be able to gash them?

My concern is we can't run against them and that makes Mario and Carson panic.

USCe was up on them 30-3. They came back and won 31-30 but that may have exposed their flaws.
I appreciate the breakdowns in this thread, great work. I watched most of that game and Reed was just awful in the first half, missing wide open WRs and throwing terrible picks. However, in the 2nd half he was brilliant and TAMU looked unstoppable. This is a very good team, this should be a game where we go back to cave ball, we need to run the ball and wing the TOP.

They are 10th in 10+ yard plays, we are 58th
They are 13th in 20+ yard plays, we are 65th
They are 36th in 30+ yard plays, we are 49th

What's wild though, is all year we've said we're not explosive, but we limit negative plays, hold the ball, and get in manageable down and distances.

And that's true, we're 6th in tackles for loss allowed.
Texas A&M is #1 in TFLs allowed.

We're 2nd in time of possession.
Texas A&M is 14th.

The one area we have them considerably is 3rd down offense.
We're 21st in 3rd down percentage.
Texas A&M is 57th.

So they're very explosive, and they never take negative plays. Tells me they've got a very good OL and a very mobile QB with strong backs.

So, can we limit explosives? We've been exceptional at it all season. Can we get some negative plays on them? We've been really good there. And can we slow them down on 3rd down if we do limit the explosives and get them behind the sticks? We've been really good there too.

Such a fascinating game to me because this is truly good on good and OK on OK. Our defense is the strength of our team. Their offense is the strength of their team. Who wins that match-up...and on the other side, our offense has been good not great, their defense has been pretty pedestrian. Can we hold serve on strength vs strength, and win the game on the side that I think we do have an advantage?

UTSA gashed them, 203 yards 6.2 per rush
Arkansas gashed them, 268 yards, 8.4 per rush
Missouri gashed them, 207, 6.1
Texas gashed them, 218, 6.2

They played a weak schedule. They're an 8-4 team with an 11-1 record. We're an 11-1 team that got robbed by the ACC officials at SMU.

ETA: We've played 4 of the top 20 rush defenses in the P4 which is one reason our running game hasn't put up big numbers.

Hopefully we get a distracted Collin Klein.

Klein, who is in his second season as Texas A&M's offensive coordinator, will be introduced Friday afternoon at Kansas State. He is expected to remain with No. 7 Texas A&M through the upcoming College Football Playoff.

i will never forget how he gashed miami at manhattan versus al golden using the wide OL splits (from hash to hash). miami didn't know what to do. thankfully D'Onofrio adjusted and the rest is history . . . .
