What happened to our LB's....

IMO the defensive line is playing pretty good. Most of the time they clog running lanes and do get pressure on the QB. I do agree that the constant stunting leaves gaps for the QB to scramble and also makes us susceptible to draws. Randy Shannon's defenses were pretty good, but he stunted a lot as well, and scrambling QB's usually ate that up . If that starts to happen you have to have a spy, which we usually use Shaq as. The problem we run into is that he is slow, over pursues to try and make up for his lack of speed, and misses tackles even when he does guess correctly. We've used JJ and Amari Carter as spy's, with more success. But that opens more 1 vs 1 situations for their wr vs our db's. Pick your poison I suppose.

See the comment below yours... cant hide from facts...you can hide behind ur numbers all you want.... Shaq is a ghost in big games , most games, the games we loose, the games that are close.... Show me shaqs highlight tape and make your case on how he should be a top draft pick ????

We have pretty good linebackers, but nowhere near what we all dreamed the three headed monster would have looked like after their freshman campaigns. Might have been unfair expectations, but adding good weight with the speed....thought we would have a dominant force back there in the running game backing up an inexperienced middle of the line.

Very early in the season, but I agree, they should learn the Mcintosh/Holmes lesson and come back as it stands now.

shaq and pickney .. i dont even remember seeing them on Saturday

Shaq was second on the team in tackles - behind G. Willis. The DTs feasted so the second level only had mop up duty. That's the way it's supposed to be.

Let's see how it goes going into ACC play. Either way unlikely any of the 3 (hopefully) declare early to the draft. **** unlikely anyone declares early but diff topic for diff day.

Very ideal considering the stud lb's coming in 2019/ gained experience of those alrdy on the roster.

no competition at the position. no one is pushing for their jobs. the guys behind them are very far behind them. We haven't had a great backer since Spence. Recruiting at the position has left a lot to be desired. We might have one or two decent guys but never stack chips.

Just another case of the fanbase overrating our own.

They aren't bad players (except McCloud...he kind of stinks), just...not great and definitely not up to standard yet. Shaq and Pinckney haven't gotten better since their freshman years. Theyll have a really good game here and there, but they are not consistent players game to game or snap to snap. Lots of false steps that put them behind the play. Its why Shaq chases so much. He's not exactly Roquan Smith either where he's fast enough to chase it down. For Pinckney, I just find that the more he's asked to be disciplined and make his reads, the sloppier he looks. He looks best when just freewheeling.

The scheme doesn't help them, but still.

I guess Denzel Perryman doesn’t exist

Perryman was a really good MLB. Even when Golden forced him to gain weight he maintained some semblance of speed. He hit like a truck as well. His issue was playing behind Doritoes defensive lines.

they are SLOW. I'm not part of the S&C conspiracy group either. Other than big hits McCloud was probably always overrated. As for Shaq and Mike, they are just average guys. Mike flashes good instincts at times but for the most part he is prone to over pursuit/gambling wrong and misses quite a few tackles. Shaq is too slow to play MLB and isnt able to fly sideline to sideline...he also misses tackles...i would rate his instincts as below average.

not trying to knock them but that's my opinion. I wish we would make a commitment to recruiting LBs with speed and instincts...I imagine there's no shortage of that in sofla hs football. Someone started a thread last week asking what type of defense would we prefer if given the choice...I'd like to see something that resembled the dolphins defense of the late 90s-early 00s under Jim Bates. I think he ran something similar to the tampa-2 but with blitzes/zone blitzes incorporated. It's based on block eaters at DT (2 big men who can eat blocks and get up field), with DEs who can set the edge first and rush the passer...athletic LBs who might be a bit undersized but can run line to line. Press man on the outside with 2 deep.

Diaz blitzes so much and its funny because under dorito we complained we didnt blitz enough. Diaz fills that void but i dont think we generate nearly enough pressure or get home enough to justify the numbers we send regularly. I would like to diaz incorporate more zone blitzes which I think would still create threat of pressure but also help cover for our inexperience in the secondary, especially if JJ misses time.

Huh? Zone blitz is his bread and butter and the number one thing we get burned on. It was a novel concept about 25 years ago and modern passing game forced guys like Dom Capers and **** LeBeau into retirement.

We zone blitz too much. We also use a 4-3 over front as our base, which suddenly becomes a 3-3-5 every third down. If you always blitz out of a formation on every 3rd down, it doesnt matter where the blitzer is coming from! The QB has a hot read and hits it.

Its why Manny got run out of Texas.

As for our LBs: poorly coached, bad scheme, and the big 3 are a bit slow as they were recruited for goldens trash.
