What happened to our jumbo set?

probably not the best choice of words.

My point is we were huge last year, went even bigger in short yardage and picked up the yards needed.

This year we are much smaller and rather than trying to get bigger in short yardage we go even smaller but try to run the same things we did last year.
And the other side is that “bigger” doesn’t automatically mean better blocking. An experienced tight end can be a better blocker than a young backup lineman.

Our O line struggles to open running lanes and gain ground on 1st and 10 at mid field against 3 man fronts. Why is it hard to understand why they can’t do it against goal line sets when the other team knows it’s coming?

And even then we used a 6th OL and a FB often. With those elite players who as you said all made the league. The point is that Dawson abandoned it completely compared to last year. I wish he explained the reasoning for it.
Needed that laugh this morning thinking Dawson decides which olineman gets in games.. Mannnn

lol minus lofton, we don’t have that. If the coaches believes Gavin mueller and Owen are better run blockers then Cantwell, merriweather or hawks we got problems

Worked alot last year. Lol. Do we not recall that we ran 32 consecutive times on 3rd and 4th and 1 or 2 and were getting stuffed a decent amount, that everyone wanted Dawson stoned to death. Then Dawson made the comment about short yardage being mirabel and the mob wanted his head. The fact is you guys love to play the " did the play work game" if we run it up and there and pound the 1st. Everyone is like **** yeah. Bully ball impose your will. We get stuffed one time, Dawson is an idiot, should have done something else. Well no **** after you see the result. Miami likes to grind the ball which puts them in alot of short yardage situations. The more you attempt, the more you will see some fall short.

Then maybe we have problems. The point for this thread, though, is that “big” isn’t automatically good.

If they really want to go heavy and push the line, move McCoy to LT, Samson to TE, SJ to FB, bring in Meriweather at RG, and Cantwell/Hawks at RT. Run to the left side and tell the right side no one gets past them. 8OL, Lofton, Mensah, Mallory or Fletcher

Outside of SJ the size of the OL isnt the issue, the current level of skill is.

My theory is to have the ability to pass the ball out of that set (see the touchdown to Lofton).

It was a great play call because it was a tendency breaker. We came oit in that formation and I told my wife, I fckiin hate this formation to try to smash it in. Theb playaction td pass to wide open Lofton, and honestly, thats a great play call because it was set up.

If you go all oline, you cant do that or set that play up.

Our tes arent good blockers.

Our interior isnt bug or that good at run blocking they are constantly getting blown back.

Id abandon it too...

In fact i have no clue why they even do it and bring more ppl into the box when needing those short yardage...and this is me a former college ol saying this. I would rather us stay spread out and not go jumbo honestly.

Nothing i hate more than short yardage and going heavy and tight formations and bringing in more bodies for the dl to just platoon and destroy gaps n creating a mosh.
