Being able to recognize talent and then close on that talent.
You also have to protect your back yard and that's all there is to it. No excuses.

selling dreams. thats all recruiters do, find out what their dream is and sell them on why u (or you school if you're not their position coach) can make it happen. u can tell when kids recap their visits who the better recruiters are.
"he was real cool. he is real funny. father figure. felt like family" things like that show that they connect on a personal level

Ability to develop relationships.. The best not only lock down the player, they lock down his family/advisors/etc.

The ability to assess your main area of recruiting, and lock it down.
LSU didn't become a powerhouse, because Saban was out stealing recruits from all over the country. They became a powerhouse, because he put a stop to other programs. Coming in the state of Louisiana, and walking away with the top talent. Les Miles has carried on with locking down the state.
Same can be said about our very own Howard Schnellenberger. Back in the early 80's. Build a fence around your area, and never let anyone get away from you. That you are not wanting out.
This requires said coach, and his staff. To be on local guys 100 times harder than any other school. An example would be a top kid from the Miami area. Being recruited by our very own Canes, and Ohio State. In no way shape or form. Should Ohio State be recruiting this kid at the same level you are. This kid is going to have reserves about your needs for him. When a school 1200 miles away. Is putting in the same amount of work for his services, as you are, if not more.
Most of the kids in your main area. Just want to feel the love, because in most part. These kids are sold to the program. They have been following it since they can remember.
