What current head coaches do you consider elite in College Football?

Seasons about to start and I'm interested to hear who fellow Canes fans consider elite coaches around college football. A combination of Recruiting and coaching is obviously a must.

Also, would you consider CMR elite?

Any coach who has won a national championship in the last 10-15 years is elite. Dabo, Urban Liar, Nick Satan to name a few.

1) Nick, Dabo, Urbs, Chris Peterson

2) Pastor Richt, Chip, Jim, Kirby

3) Everybody else until proven otherwise.

Saban and Meyer are in a tier by themselves.

Dabo has certainly rocketed up the rankings recently, but you'd have to be nuts to put him in Tier 1. I'm fairly certain that Petersen and Patterson are better than he is, but without the obvious institutional advantages afforded by a school like Clemson.

I'd say that Richt is top 10 in the game right now, which is more than enough to win big at Miami. People crowning Kirby are doing it waaaay too early. The guy could be a redneck Brady Hoke for all we know. Let's see how he does with his own players and not 30+ of Richt's seniors.

Only a few elite coaches in football
Saban
Urban Meyer
Dabo swinney
Jimbo Fisher(he’s had sustained success and won a championship but without a trancesdant talent at qb he would be in that very good range with richt in the others too)

And a host of very good-good coaches after them

Yeah I can't argue with that top 4 at all. But how long does Peterson get to stay up top without a national championship? I think he's a few years away from being viewed in a very similar way as Richt.

Fair take. Can't complain about having a coach in the top 10 across college football.. Our previous coach wouldn't have cracked the top 100!

I can't give you jimbo, the way that program fell apart the past couple years is not something you would see from an elite coach. But if he can make A&M a real threat you may change my mind.

Always impressed by Gary Patterson’s work with TCU. Not sure I’d call him elite though.

Are you sure about Jim? What has he actually achieved? Isn’t his record against penn state and Ohio state horrible? And even Michigan state is pretty competitive?

Good list..

Jimbo is on the fence. If aTm becomes a player than I'd say yes!

Who do you guys think is on the verge of becoming elite????

I'd say:

Herman - if he can recreate what he did at UH at UT (which should be easier for him), he could be a problem

Peterson - had success everywhere

Frost - the turnaround at UCF was impressive. See herman

Cant think of anyone else

Why are all the Lane Kiffin fanboys suddenly so quiet?

And what about the coach at FIU? I hear he has a lot of fans on here, too.

Saban first only one with 6 championships.
Second urban has multiple championships
Everyone with one third tier
Everyone else fourth tier
It's about championships saban, bear Bryant set the bar for everyone.

So if you coach at a school that doesn't spend 100s of millions on their football program, then you aren't an elite coach? Or if you coach at a school that, no matter how well you perform (Boise State, UCF) you won't get invited to play for a national championship, you also aren't elite?
